THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, June 29, 1916,Volume XXXIX, Number 33, Page 5, Column 3, “OBITUARY. Brown.” [Transcribed September 28, 2003 from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
Emma A. BROWN was born in Bloomington, {Monroe County, Indiana,} October 22, 1844, and departed this life at her old home in Beech Creek Township, June 11, 1916, at 3:30 p.m., aged seventy-one years, seven months and twenty-one days.
She was married to Floyd B., BROWN, October 2, 1866. To this union were born four children—one daughter and three sons. They are Cora, Charles, John and Jay, all of this place and were present during her last sickness and death.
She is survived by one brother and two sisters—Charles C. HUDSON, Lucinda ABRAMS and Letitia MCHALEY.
She united with the Christian Church at the early age of fifteen years and was a faithful member until death.
She was a true and devoted wife; a better and a more loving mother never lived, and was a good and kind neighbor.
Her health had failed rapidly since the death of her husband seven months ago.
She signified her willingness to go and said all was well and peace was made.

Hannah Mariah (MCDONALD) DUKE was born in Jackson Township, November 4, 1844, and departed this life June 23, 1916, at the age of seventy-one years, seven months and nineteen days. She was a daughter of Philip and Margaret (MCGILL) MCDONALD.

Early in life she became a member of the Christian Church at Bethel, Jackson Township, and remained steadfast in the faith until her Creator called her to her reward.
Mrs. DUKE had been in failing health for several months but seemed better than usual for the past few weeks, being suddenly stricken with apoplexy at 12:30 o’clock a. m. Friday , and passed away about 9 p.m. the same day.
Besides her children she leaves to half sisters, Mrs. Mary PADGETT, of Koleen, and Mrs. Eliza ALEXANDER, of Canada, and seven grandchildren, Iva, Iona and Hazel DUKE, Harold and Cecil ZOOK and Richard and William DUKE, and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her departure. The deceased was a true friend, a sympathetic neighbor and a devoted mother and will be greatly missed by all.
In her declining years, the deceased resided with her son, Mack DUKE.
Her remains were taken to Clifty Tuesday and interred in the DUKE Cemetery beside her husband. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Henry FLORY.

After a few weeks confinement to his home following a stroke of apoplexy, R. R. BACKENSTOE, the pioneer tinsmith, died last Sunday morning at 4 o’clock.
He was well known and had lived here since 1870. During the forty-six years of residence here, he spent eight months at Vincennes, where he engaged in the hardware business with Irvin H. SMITH. His acquaintances and friendships here caused a longing to return to the town of his youth, and as soon as he could close out his business at Vincennes, he returned to make Bloomfield his home for the remainder of his life.
The deceased was born in Centerville, Wayne County, March 4, 1844. After completing his common school studies he attended White Water College at Centerville and Earlham College at Richmond.
He was a Mason and was a loyal member, but he never united with any church, although he had from convictions of right doing and endeavored to always be fair in his dealings with his fellowmen.
In 1871 he married Miss Josephine ROSE, a daughter of Capt. E. E. ROSE and wife. To this union was born one daughter, Mrs. Bessie EVANS, of Indianpolis, and one son, Wm. BACKENSTOE.
In 1880 he was married to Miss Lillie HOLT, a daughter of the late M. L. HOLT, of Newark, who survives him.
The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at his late residence on West Spring Street, conducted by Rev. Merritt OWEN, pastor of the Christian church.
Music was furnished by the men’s quartette.
The pallbearers were selected from the Masonic fraternity.
Interment in Grand View Cemetery.

We wish to thank our many kind friends and neighbors for their sweet sympathy and unselfish service to us during the long sickness and death of our husband and father, R. R. BACKENSTOE. This was a great strength and help to us. It is impossible to fully express our gratitude in words.

Louisa Jane WRIGHT, was born in Jackson Township, Greene County, March 25, 1850, and died May 25, 1916, aged sixty-six years, and two months. She was married to Nelson REED, October 16, 1873, he having preceded her into eternal life by one year, six months and twelve days. He died November 15, 1914. To this union was born nine children—five boys and four girls—all of whom are living. All but one was in attendance at her bedside when the end came.
Mrs. REED had been afflicted and a great sufferer from rheumatism for nineteen years, the last ten of which she was confined entirely to her home, not being able to go or be taken away at all. Her sufferings were intense, but she bore it with utmost patience and fortitude and uncomplainly. While she suffered untold miseries, yet she was always cheerful and bright, with a smile and pleasant word for all.
She was a most devoted wife and mother, and was true to her neighbors; a most devout Christian, having unbounded faith in her Savior and trusting that He doeth all things well. She united with the Christian church in her early girlhood and led a most consistent Christian life and dying with the assertion that not my will but Thine be done.

Mrs. Sarah KIRK, an aged and highly respected lady died at the home of her son, Edgar KIRK, last Thursday. Funeral at ASHCRAFT Chapel Friday, conducted by Rev. SKINNER, of Switz City.
Sarah (CRUM) KIRK was born in Monroe County, Indiana, August 1, 1841. Died at the home of her son Edgar KIRK, near Robison, Indiana, June 11, 1925, aged eighty-three years, ten months and ten days. She was married to Drury KIRK in 1864. To this union six children were born, five boys and one girl. Namely: Edgar, of Robison; Homer, of Rockwood, Harvey, Alvadore and Lafe, all of Odon, and Rhoda Bell CRUM, who passed to her eternal home several years ago. Mr. and Mrs. KIRK toiled together for their family, enduring the hardships of pioneer life until the year 1883, when he passed away. His passing away added hardships to herself and family. But fortunately they remained together on a small farm until most of her children were married. After her children were all married she broke up housekeeping and lived among her children. She united with the Christian church early in life and remained true to her faith until her death. And in her last hours she was happy and sang p!
raises to her Master. Mrs. KIRK was a kind, loving mother and was a good neighbor. The writer has known her for years and we have never heard aught against her and never heard her speak evil of any one. Nor never heard of her murmuring or complaining of her lot it life. She was laid to rest in the ASHCRAFT Cemetery June 12. Funeral service by Rev. SKINNER. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the community.
