THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, October 18, 1934,Volume LVIII, Number 51, Page 1, Column 3, “FUNERAL WAS HELD TODAY—Mrs. Sig Rogers Passed Away at Home Sunday After Long Illness.” [Transcribed April 24, 2003 from the original newspaper on file in the Office of The Recorder of Greene County, Court House, Bloomfield, IN.]
The passing away of Mrs. Ellen Elizabeth (DIXON) ROGERS at her home north of Bloomfield last Sunday morning at 4:30 truly removes from that community a worthy neighbor and friend.
She was the daughter of James and Rebecca Ann DIXON and was born August 11, 1868. At the age of eight she was motherless and helped assume the care of the younger children. She was married September 8, 1888, to Sig ROGERS, who is a prominent fruit grower in this section of the state, who survives her. Eight children came to bless them, one, Ross J., having died when six months old. The children who survive are Mrs. Ora FAINOT, of Linton; Mrs. Mack DUKE and Mrs. Everett BRIDGES, of Bloomfield; Mrs. Arthur DUNCAN, of Detroit, Michigan; Mrs. William HENRY, also of Bloomfield; Robert ROGERS, of Oakland, California, and Paul ROGERS, of Louisville, Kentucky. She leaves ten grandchildren, Dorothy (FAINOT) BUCK, Opal (BRIDGES) LAUGHLIN, Mary Dee DUKE, Roland, Jeanne and Robert DUNCAN, Billy and Betty HENRY, Elwanda Jane ROGERS and Ralph E. BRIDGES. She also leaves a sister, Mrs. Milt EDWARDS, and a brother, Carl DIXON, both of Bloomfield.
In early childhood she became a member of the M. E. church in Bloomfield. With the exception of two years at Crawfordsville their entire married life was spent in Union Bethel neighborhood. It was here that she became a member of the Church of God, faithful and loyal in its support and having the rare joy of leading every member of the family into the church. Whatever of worth presented itself, Mrs. ROGERS was always ready in its support. When the church at that place ceased to be an organization, she, with all the family living near here, became members of the Methodist church in Bloomfield, where her activities never ceased until prevented by her late illness of four years. She had planned to attend the Rally Day at the Methodist church this past Sunday and had given flowers to beautify the church, but God said, “It is enough, come up higher,” then her spirit gently took its flight.
The understanding heart, the tender smile, the words of help and cheer, the faith that never doubted, were some of the finest possessions of her true life in her home. Unselfish and noble acts of love were also characteristic of her in her community where she was so often administering to the sick and distressed.
“I know the hurt is keen today, I know the loss is great, but what if you should go away with no one there to wait? And oh, how lonely heaven would be if all you loved were here, and here was none you longed to see to welcome you, my dear.”

>From the White River Gazette, Worthington, Nov. l9, l863: The
steamer Sunny Side, on her way from Memphis to Cairo, was burned on
the l3th inst. (=this month). She had a large passenger list and a very
heavy freight. Among the latter were l,380 bales of cotton which, with the
boat, were destroyed. About thirty persons were lost, together with nine
ladies and six children. Among the number we notice the name of Mrs.
Strong . This is, no doubt, the wife of Henry Strong of Smith Township in
this county. About two weeks since she visited Memphis for the purpose
of administering to her husband who was lying dangerously sick at the
Hospital in that city. Judging from the time she has been gone, it is more
than probable that she tok passage on this unfortunately steamer, for the
purpose of returning to her family, but perished in the flames.

I saw your listing from the census on the Fry family. Andrew Jackson Fry was my gg-grandfather. His son was George Riley. There has been a problem with the two George Frys. One's initial is W and the other is R. Mine is the one who died in 1920 and his parents were Andrew Jackson and Amanda Jane (Royal) Fry. My grandfather changed his last name to Frye because there were so many and it was confusing.

Mr. Rogers died suddenly of a heart attack Saturday morning at his home north of Bloomfield. During his life, all but eight years of which were spent in this vicinity, he had become widely known as an orchardist and had received national recognition for the apples which he developed, the "Rogers Red," and the "Hoosier." His orchard is known throughout the nation particularly for its "Grimes Golden" apples. The funeral was in charge of the Kidd Undertaking Company.
THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, July 20, 1939,Volume LXIII, Number 38, Page 1, Column 1, “Rowland “Sig” Rogers, Prominent Orchardist of Greene County, Expires—Nationally Know Orchardist Dies of Heart Attack At His Home.” [Transcribed April 24, 2003 from the original newspaper on file with The Recorder of Greene County, Court House, Bloomfield, Indiana.]
Rowland Sigel (Sig) ROGERS, nationally known orchardist, died of a heart attack at his home northwest of Bloomfield, Saturday morning at 7:45 o’clock. Mr. ROGERS had been in poor health for some time. He had arisen as usual Saturday morning and had eaten his breakfast. Shortly afterward he became ill and a physician was summoned but he died before the doctor could arrive.
He was recognized over the nation as one of the best orchardist in the country. Several times he received awards for new apples he had developed. Two of his most liked developments were the “Rogers Red” and the “Hoosier.”
Sig ROGERS was born October 10, 1862, in Guernsey County, Ohio, the son of Joseph and Lydia Ann ROGERS. He came to Greene County, in the Coen community, when he was a small boy and most of his life was spent in and near Bloomfield. On September 7, 1888, he was married to Elizabeth Ellen DIXON. She passed away in October 1934.
In 1895 he purchased the present site of the ROGERS Orchard Farms. He began the cultivation of apples on a large scale. He retired a few years ago, leaving the management of the orchard to a son-in-law, Everett BRIDGES.
For many years he was a member of the Bethel Union Church north of Bloomfield, but transferred his membership to the Bloomfield Methodist Church where he was a regular attendant as long as his health permitted.
He is survived by five daughters, Mrs. May FAINOT, of Linton, Mrs. Delia DUKE, of near Bloomfield, Mrs. Roxie BRIDGES, living at the ROGERS Orchard Farms home; Mrs. Gladys DUNCAN, of Detroit; Mrs. Verna HENRY, of Bloomfield; two sons, Robert ROGERS, Oakland, California, and Paul ROGERS, of Indianapolis; two sisters, Mrs. James VEST, of Bloomfield, and Mrs. Anna BEALE, of Flint, Michigan, eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the M. E. Church. Interment afterwards.
