Robert--
I've seen your obit postings for some time on ancestry.com. From that, I gather that you have access or knowledge to newspapers of the day.
I'd sure appreciate help on a brick wall of mine. Lydia NEWTON married Richard (aka Asa, Asahel, Ace, Acey, etc.) WEAVER in 1885 in Greene Co. The NEWTONs had lived there for some time. Lydia and Richard had a bunch of kids and then he died in the mid 1890s. If there are WEAVER obits from that time, I'd be most appreciative of your help.

THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, July 29, 1913,Volume XXXVIII, Number 37, Page 5, Column 4, “OBITUARY. Wilkie.” [Transcribed March 27, 2003 from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
LeeRoy WILKIE was born in Wapello County, Iowa, October 19, 1858, and his spirit left his body at his home in Bloomfield, July 21, 1915, being at the time of his home-going fifty-six years, nine months and two days old.
His parents were Charles and Elizabeth {SIMPSON} Wilkie. He had four sisters and one brother. His brother, Edmond E., while a young man, passed to the life beyond November 30, 1884. His surviving sisters are Mrs. Julia LEAVITT and Mrs. Jane COVERT, of Bloomfield; Mrs. Ida LONG, of Elnora, and Mrs. Sadie HARRIS, of Attica.
When only six years of age he came with his family from Iowa to Indiana, settling in Bloomfield, where he had resided ever since.
He was married to Josephine HARRIS, November 22, 1887. To them were given five children, all of whom are living except a little girl, Helen, who went to rest when four weeks old. The surviving children are Harris E. WILKIE, Mrs. Madge TORR, Charles WILKIE and Frances WILKIE, all living in or near Bloomfield.
Mr. WILKIE had fought against stomach trouble since early life, which more or less interrupted his work as a farmer; but he was notwithstanding this, a successful and progressive tiller of the soil until paralyzed more that two years ago. He excelled in raising corn, and won a bronze medal at the World’s Fair on corn; and at other places his judgment and skill had given him first place for the same cereal.
His aggressive, progressive and industrious nature made him a help to his fellow farmers.
He loved his family; and as son, brother, husband and father he was devoted and faithful
In the winter of 1890 under the preaching of Evangelist HUNT he made a profession of religion in the Baptist Church of Bloomfield, but he never united with any church.
During his protracted sickness his wife and faithful children did what they could to relieve his suffering.
The funeral services were held at his residence last Friday at 3 p.m. and the body was buried in Grandview Cemetery. Elder J. A. SPENCER officiated.

Last Friday night, David GAREY, a well-known ex-soldier and prominent as an official in the courthouse, died suddenly of heart trouble. He probably passed away without awakening, as there was no indication of a struggle when his body was found by members of the household after they awoke Saturday morning.
Mr. GAREY came here from Shoals in 1904 to serve as deputy clerk, under Circuit Clerk J. W. YAKEY. At Shoals he had served in almost all the official positions in the Martin County courthouse.
He was a Royal Arch Mason and he was well versed in the ritual of that order. He was also a K. of P. and a member of the G. A. R.
He enlisted in the Civil war in COMPANY F, EIGHTY-FIFTH REGIMENT OHIO VOLUNTEER INFANTRY in 1862 and served three months, after which he re-enlisted in COMPANY K, 122ND REGIMENT OHIO INFANTRY. He participated in all the engagements of the Army of the Potomac and at the close of the war was discharged as a first sergeant.
He was born May 5, 1844 and had been twice married. Besides a host of relatives and friends he leaves two sons, Willard GAREY, of St. Louis, Bert GAREY, of Shoals, and one daughter, Mrs. Harry CARRELL, of Indianpolis, and his wife, Mrs. Catherine (RITTER) GAREY, and a step-son, J. S. WHITAKER, of Scotland, and three sisters.
During his residence in Bloomfield, he had taken an interest in all public affairs and served one term as a town trustee.
He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and his funeral was held in that church Monday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. R. W. FISH. Interment in Grand View Cemetery, under the auspices of Bloomfield Lodge No. 84, F. & A. M.
About fifty relatives and friends from Shoals, Odon, Indianapolis, Loogootee, Vincennes, Burns City, Worthington, Lyons and Scotland, besides a large concourse of friends from Bloomfield and vicinity attended the funeral.

THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, November 4, 1915,Volume XXXVIII, Number 51, Page 1, Column 4, “Pioneer Woman Answers Last Call.” [Transcribed March 26, 2003 from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
Lucinda CORBIN was born October 23, 1837, near Owensburg. She was the daughter of Armstead and Mary HATFIELD.
On November 4, 1855, she was united in marriage to B. F. CORBIN and moved to the vicinity known as “Kentucky Ridge” in Jackson Township. Here in a one-room log house they withstood the hardships of the early pioneer life. Her husband enlisted in the war as volunteer in CO G 97TH REGT and served three years while she spent those years at home alone with the children among the wolves, deer and other wild animals of the early days; doing the work of men and also spinning the wool and making the clothing for her family. At the close of the war her husband returned home and they both toiled together until June 21, 1874, when her husband was taken from her.
To them were born eight children—Martin, of Owensburg; Noah, of Urbana, Illinois; Ellen, of Washington, Daviess County, Artie and Armstead, of near Linton; John R. and Frank, of Switz City. One child, Raymond, died in infancy.
Mrs. CORBIN united with the M. E. church at Owensburg at about the age of sixteen, and later placed her membership with the Baptist church at Kentucky Ridge. She lived a Christian life until death called her. She has been ready and longing for her home beyond—for several years.
The deceased leaves seven children, twenty-seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren to mourn her departure.
She is also survived by two sisters and two brothers—Mrs. Amanda RHODES, of New Mexico; Mrs. Genetta RICHARDSON, of Springfield, Oregon; Ale HATFIELD, of Bedford, and Thomas HATFIELD, of York, Nebraska.
About five years ago Mrs. CORBIN moved from her old home to Switz City. Here she spent the rest of her days. A hard stroke of paralysis, with a few lingering days ended her life, passing away very peacefully without a struggle. She was aged seventy-eight years and seven days.
She will be greatly missed in the community; missed by her friends as well as the relatives.
Services were conducted at her home Sunday afternoon, before taking her to her last resting place at Kentucky Ridge, where Rev. Logan HATFIELD conducted a short, but impressive service of the life of the last charter member of that church in the presence of a large audience and her entire family.

Highland Township and the Tulip neighborhood lost its oldest pioneer on September 1, when death claimed David MCCULLOUGH. He was born in Kentucky, August 21, 1818, but as a child he became a resident of Greene County, when his parents Jonathan and Elizabeth MCCULLOUGH emigrated to Indiana. He was one of a family of twelve children, and only one survives him. He was well known to Bloomfield people and often spent a day in town, but for the last three years he was blind and very seldom left his country home.
The deceased was ardent in his devotion to church work and over fifty years ago he united with the Church at Cross Roads Bethel. He was a true Christian and enjoyed religious services. His devotion to the church caused his friends and neighbors to establish a prayer meeting at his home last February and every Friday nigh services were conducted there.
He was married August 11, 1844 to Emily SKINNER. To this union one child, Maggie LEHMAN, was born in October 1845.
His first wife went to her heavenly home October 30, 1892. He was married again on August 19, 1893 to Adeline MOORE who survives.
Besides his widow, he leaves one daughter, one brother, seven grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his departure.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Henry FLORY. Interment in the cemetery at Tulip.

Dorothy Frances MULLIS was born near Scotland, Greene County, March 22, 1852, and died November 1, 1915, in the home they had so long occupied near Mineral.
She was converted and united with the M. E. Church when twelve years old. She was married to Hugh CHANEY January 14, 1869.
Six children—four girls and two boys were born to these parents—Dora SKINNER, of Bloomfield; Maria, (deceased); George, of Mineral; Ella HUTTON, of Vicksburg; Ross (deceased;) and Mae SIMMONS, of Bloomfield.
The seventeen grandchildren, one great-grandchild, the husband, brothers, sisters, relatives and scores of sympathizing friends mourn her departure.
Aunt Doll, as she was familiarly called, lived a pure simple religious life for forty-six years; was a devoted companion, a loving mother and grandmother; an esteemed neighbor and friend.
For eighteen months she was a constant sufferer, but she was ever patient and had implicit faith in a Dear and Loving Savior who doeth all things well.
The funeral services were conducted at the Mineral M. E. church, Tuesday, conducted by Rev. R. W. FISH. Interment at Mt Zion cemetery.

Sarah C. VANDUSER, the youngest and last surviving child of a family of six children born to George VANDUSER and wife, was born in Shawneetown, Gallatin County, Illinois December 1, 1857; died at her home two miles west of Switz City, Indiana, November 10, 1915; aged fifty-seven years, eleven months, and nine days. She was married to B. F. WINTERS in March 1873, and immediately removed to Greene County, Indiana, where she lived until the time of her death. To this union were born a son and a daughter. The son, William F., died in infancy; the daughter, now Mrs. Anna SINCLAIR, of Switz City, still survives. Mrs. WINTERS united with the Baptist church in Switz City in 1892, and remained a member of it till the summer of 1915, when she cast in her lot with the little company of disciples starting in Switz City and desiring to be known simply as Christians. She had been in failing health for the past year and October 30, was taken suddenly and seriously ill, and continued s!
inking until God released her and called her home. In her death her daughter and two granddaughters have lost a loving, devoted mother and grandmother, and the community a friend, tried and true. In her home the poor and distressed found help and sympathy, and the orphan an asylum. She reared six or eight orphan children, and three were in her home at the time of her death. This is pure and undefiled religion. The funeral services, largely attended, were held at the Baptist Church in Switz City on Friday, November 12, at 10:30 am, conducted by T. A. COX, after which the body was laid to rest in the beautiful Switz City Cemetery, to await the hour when all who are in their graves shall come forth, “In God we trust.”

Floyd B. BROWN was born in Beech Creek Township, Greene County, Indiana, July 3, 1840, and departed this life in the shade of the evening at his daughter’s, south of their home, they had so long occupied near Hendricksville, where he lived a useful and honorable life. He was age seventy-five years, three months and four days.
On December 1, 1861, he enlisted in the service of his country and served as a private in COMPANY D, 50TH INDIANA INFANTRY. Discharged January 5, 1865.
On October 2, 1866, he was married to Emma HUDSON, and to this union were born four children—three sons and one daughter. They are Cora, Charley, John and Jay, all of this place, and were present during his last sickness and death. Three brothers—William J., of Bloomington; Emmanuel B., of Iowa; and Doctor R., of Missouri; also a faithful wife who will greatly miss him.
He was not strong, but an industrious man of determined will power with a frail constitution.
He had been in failing health for many years, being confined to his room most of the winter months and a part of time was bedfast. But in all this time he exemplified a fortitude and patience that was remarkable.
He was an affectionate husband and father, a loyal man, a good neighbor, and kind friend He will be missed in the home and in the community.
But his walk and every day testimony and affection for his good wife and children leave a halo of light and hope to beckon on us on through tears may fail and hearts be sad.

THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Thursday, November 18, 1915,Volume XXXIX, Number 1, Page 4, Column 1, “OBITUARY—Petty.” [Transcribed March 25, 2003 from microfilm of the original newspaper on file in the Bloomfield-Eastern Greene County Public Library.]
The following regarding the death of William PETTY, husband of a former Greene County girl, Miss Fae BRADFORD, is taken from the Rensselaer Democrat of November 6.
William M. PETTY, JR—youngest son of William and Mary E. PETTY, was born January 27, 1870, near Hobart, Indiana, and departed this life October 26, 1915, at Wesley Hospital in Chicago.
He was a member of a family of twelve children.
His father died some years ago, but his aged mother is still living and resides with her daughter, Mrs. Ora YEOMAN, in Chicago.
Mr. PETTY was married June 25, 1912, to Miss Fae BRADFORD, of Bloomfield, Indiana, who had been teaching school in this county. They spent a short but a happy married life. Some two years ago Mr. PETTY underwent a very critical operation for appendicitis, but after a long sickness he partially recovered, but had never been well, and on Monday, October 25, at 1:30 a.m. he was taken suddenly ill and Dr. KRESLER was called. He did not make a sudden decision, but at a second call was fully decided that another operation was necessary and must be performed at once. So arrangements were made for the fast train to stop and his wife and Dr. KRESLER hastened him to Wesley hospital, where he again underwent a still more serious operation for obstruction of the bowels. His body was in a very weak condition and unable to undergo this operation, and after about twelve hours of suffering he passed quietly away.
However he came out from under the anesthetic and was conscious to the last, bidding his wife good-by, at has beside. He had some weeks before expressed to her his willingness to die and be relieved of his suffering, which had been almost continual.
His remains were prepared for burial in the city and shipped back to Fair Oaks {Jasper County, Indiana} where the funeral services were conducted by Rev. POSTILL, at the M. E. church, after which his remains were taken to Prater Cemetery {Barkley Township} and laid to rest beside his father, brothers and sisters.
Besides his wife, mother, brothers and sisters, he leaves behind a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his departure.
Those who came from a distance to attend the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. D. A. BRADFORD, of Bloomfield; Mrs. Austin LAKIN and two children, of State Line; Mr. and Mrs. Ora YEOMAN, Blanche COOPER, Dan, Will, Harriet and Henrietta MELTON, of Chicago.
