THE BLOOMFIELD DEMOCRAT, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Friday, February 27, 1885, Volume XVII, Number 1, Page 3, Column 4, “OBITUARY.”
Sacred to the memory of Susan TODD, who departed this life February 17th, 1885.
The deceased was born in Beaver County, Pennsylvania, October 22nd, 1827, and was therefore fifty-seven years, three months and twenty-five days old. She was married to Loyd TODD, March 10th, 1847. From this union nine children were born, five of whom survive her. Although she had been suffering several months, she was confined to her bed but about two. She bore her sufferings without a murmur, and placed her whole hopes on Christ, who always comforted her in her pain. She had been a member of the church forty-three years, having joined the Methodist Church in her native state at the age of fourteen; and she lived an exemplary life and was a devoted Christina. After moving to this state, there being no church near her of the same faith and order, she joined the regular Baptist Church at Pleasant Ridge, being a member in full fellowship when she died. On the evening of her death (the following morning) she called all her family (except one that was absent) around her b!
edside and bid them good bye, no seeming the least be alarmed. She said, “I am not going to die now, but it won’t be long.” She struggled on in life’s narrow bounds till five o’clock, a.m., when the Lord said, “It is enough, come up higher.” Although she had lost her speech some time before her death, she sang and prayed in her low, faint voice and never seemed discouraged or disheartened. Among her last words she said, “Tell my older sisters and brothers I die happy and want to meet them all in heaven.” As a companion she was always loving and kind, making home attractive and happy. As a mother she was devoted to her family, always taking the greatest pains to make them happy, sharing the comforts and sorrows equally with all; causing in return her children to cling to her as their only earthly friend. As a neighbor she was always charitable and willing at all times to lend a helping hand to suffer!
ing humanity, let it present itself in what form it would. Surrounded by kind friends and everything needful, still we are led to say:
What is home without a mother!
Her familiar voice is no longer heard
In the family circle. The rocking chair
In which she used to sit stands motionless;
The bed in which she used to lie is vacant;
And all the surroundings seem to assume
A lonely attitude. But as it were
One by one He gathered His jewels home.

Dean,
I am working on filling in some blanks from the Licthfield Messenger line. Most of them actually resided in Barkhamsted, which is in Litchfield County. There are three families from this branch that I have had no luck with. They are Moses, Elisha, and Aaron Messenger. 1790 Census of Barkhamsted had Moses with 2 males 16 and under (b.bet. 1774-1790); Elisha with one, and Aaron, who is residing in Sandisfield, Berkshire, Ma with, I believe three, as I don't have his info in front of me. Most of the Barkhamsted branches did relocate to New York (Madison and Chenango counties) at some point. Good Luck in your search. If you find anything, keep me posted. I'll do the same.
Regards,

THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Friday,, February 25, 1884, Volume VIII, Number 33, Page 2, Column 5, “ANDREW J. NEWSOM.”
Died, Sunday morning, July 20, 1884, at 9 o’clock a.m., at his residence in Bloomfield, of inflammation of the stomach, aged 60 years, 3 months and 10 days.
Mr. NEWSOM came to Greene County in 1831, and settled in the fork of Eel River, in the CLARK neighborhood, when eight years old. He married a Miss CLARK, daughter of Uncle Tommy CLARK, and raised a large and useful family. He was one of the largest general stock dealers Greene County ever had; a good financier, never suffering any great losses by his own action or judgment. The severe losses he sustained were cause by implicit confidence in friends. He was energetic, persevering, and industrious; an excellent neighbor, a true husband and kind father. The high esteem in which he was held by his neighbors and acquaintances, was evidenced by one of the largest funeral processions we ever witnessed in Bloomfield. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. Lodge at Worthington, but was buried by the Bloomfield Lodge, Rev. W. E. DAVIS conducting the funeral services.

THE BLOOMFIELD DEMOCRAT, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Friday, March 20, 1895, Volume XVI, Number 52, Page 2, Columns 6, “OBITUARY.”
Died, at his residence at Tulip, Greene County, Indiana, March 11, 1885, Jacob AXE, Sen., aged 73 years, 2 months and 11 days.
The deceased was painfully afflicted with Bright’s disease of the kidneys for about four months. He continued to grow weaker until Wednesday morning, March 11, when this aged father in Israel calmly closed his eyes in death, while his blood-washed spirit was borne by angels to the resting place prepared for all God’s people. On Thursday, the 12th alt., his remains were followed by a large concourse of weeping friends and neighbors to the cross-roads Bethel graveyard, there to await his Master’s call. Father AXE professed faith in Christ, and united with the Church of God in the year 1834, and continued a faithful laborer in the vineyard of his Master for fifty-one years, when God said, “It is enough, come up higher.” In the death of father AXE a void has been left in the church, which will not soon be filled. His was a sweet disposition and his kind and Christian admonitions will exert and influence upon the lives of others. May!
God’s blessing continue to rest upon his amiable wife Margaret, and give her sustaining grace a few days more until God will say, “It is enough, come up higher.” Where she will be able to strike glad hands with her departed companion in the paradise of heaven. May God help the children to treasurer the counsels of their sainted father and at least meet him at God’s right hand in heaven. Funeral services by Elder E. LOVE, for II Cor., v:l.
NOAH E. FLORY.

THE BLOOMFIELD NEWS, Bloomfield, Greene County, Indiana, Friday July 4, 1884, Volume VIII, Number 30, Page 3, Column 3, “IN MEMORIAM
DIED.—At his residence in Owensburg, Indiana on Saturday, June 28, 1884, Doctor William H. DOWDEN.
Deceased was born in Monroe County, Indiana, forty-three years ago. He was raised on a farm, having the advantages of the public schools in which he taught a few terms. Selecting as a profession the practice of medicine, he attended a Cincinnati medical college, where he graduated with honors.
Soon after completing his education he came to Owensburg, where he began the practice of medicine. He came a stranger and with limited means, but by industry, always coupled with courtesy, he rapidly rose to distinction in his profession, and so ingratiated himself into the affections of the people as to call around him a host of warm friends who never deserted him, not even in the hour of need.
In 1876 he was married to Miss Nannie WARRING, daughter of Dr. WARRING, of Smithville, Monroe County. This union proved to be a happy one. They have one child, a bright little boy of four years.
Doctor has ever been a friend to the poor, though not a member of any church, he was always ready to lend a helping hand, every heeding their calls of charity. He was an honored member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and be it said to their credit that they certainly fulfilled their obligations to him.
His health had been declining for some time, but he was not confined to his room until about the first of April. During his long illness, while the “sands of life seemed to ebb away one by one,” he bore his sufferings with heroic fortitude. Through these hours of suffering, his bosom companion watched over and helped to care for him with that tender sympathy known only to the true wife and mother.
Dr. WARRING, his father-in-law, remained with him during the grater part of his sickness, doing everything that could be done for his relief. When his disease assumed a form that forbade all hope of recovery, he spoke to his wife and friends concerning his business affairs, and gave minute instructions for his burial. At his own request religious services were held at his residence, on Sunday afternoon, June 15th. He manifested an interest in the subject of Christianity, and his expressions to his friends will prevent them from sorrowing as those who have no hope.
He had the kindest attention of his neighbors and friends, and was always glad to see them, requesting to see as many as possible before his departure.
His remains were accompanied by a large concourse of sympathizing friends to a cemetery near his old home, where, surrounded by a large number of people, his body was consigned to its last resting place. Elder Wm. BAKER not being able to attend, the religious services ere conducted by Elder W. H. KRUTSINGER, of Ellettsville.
The old friends and neighbors tendered their hospitalities to all persons in attendance from a distance, thus showing appreciation of their kindness to.
