Today I went to a few local cemeteries to get fresh air and to learn. These
aren't the full data I found. Just wrote down the oldest. Those are the
hardest to find. I hope this helps someone.
Just wanted to share a little info.
Good searching.

Hello List,
I am seeking the parents and siblings of GEORGE W. BURNETT,
born in Indiana, November 15, 1862.
I have no idea the county. That was all I could find on census, death
certificate, etc.
On a tape, made when she was very old, his wife Mary, related this story told
to her by GEORGE.
George's mother was killed in an accident or died suddenly, when he was an
infant.
There were other children, don't know ages or how many. George was adopted by
Shoemaker/Shumaker?Shoebaker???
He lived with them until the courthouse burned. It destroyed the adoption
records. I don't know his age at the time this occurred. He was in Sumner
County, Kansas on April 14, 1900. On that day he married Mary M. Bell.
George said he couldn't have left if the records were still available for his
adoption. Reason unknown. When he left Indiana, he took back his birth name
BURNETT, and continued to use it until his death.
This is a brick wall. I would really appreciate any help or advise you could
provide.
If you have any information, you may Email me at JANETSQUAW(a)aol.com
Thank you in advance for your help.
Respectfully yours,
Jan
Jan,
Here are some possible counties to check (source: Handybook)
Brown County - some records lost in 1873 fire
Jasper County - courthouse burned in 1862, all records lost
Madison County - no early records other than land records, no reason given
Good luck.

In 1860 John and Sarah GILSON are listed on the Greene Co. Indiana census,
along with three children.
In 1862 John remarried to Edna HUNTER.
I have never found out what became of Sarah (McKaig) GILSON between 1860 and
1862.
I have never been able to find John and Edna in 1870.
Is there a death list for Greene County, Indiana?
Is there a census on-line for 1870 Greene County, Indiana?
Dave
The book is called The Bound Boy. The author is Harold D. Cromwell, who
grew up in and around Linton.

I have found a land deed that is really puzzling to me. Since finding this one I saw
another one drawn up the same way so figured there must be a reason for this type of deed.
On Oct. 8, 1850, Greene Co, IN; my William and Sarah Brazel sold 60 acres to Henry Shively
for $400 on the condition that he would take care of them for the rest of their lives.
Actual wording is as follows:
"....that the said party of the second part, shall and will well and truely, maintain and
support the said party of the first part during the term of their natural lives, agreeably
to the terms, tenor and effect of a certain penal bond or writing obligatory this day
executed to the said William Brazle by the said first party.......
I have never found a Shively connected with our Brazzle family so am unable to understand
this deed. Has anyone ever found a deed like this one before? Was this a common practice?
At first I thought Shively must be related somehow but I have been unable to figure it out.
I'd sure appreciate any help or ideas on the land deed.

I'm trying again to shake loose some family information.
Adam B. Deem moved to Greene County IN before 1910, with 4 daughters in
tow: Grace b. 1889 Susie b. 1892 Gertrude b. ? Florence b. 1899 -
all born in OH. Adam's wife was deceased, and he did not live long
after arriving - died within the year.
Susie lived with a family named Jarvis prior to her marriage to Noah
Boone Jackson in Greene County. She worked at the Central Office, in
Bloomfield. The first children of their family were born there.
Grace married a Wilson, and then somewhere along the line, ended back in
OH withe a husband named Crutchfield. She had at least two daughters,
one named Zona. Don't know where or when they were born.
Florence also ended up back in OH, married to Joseph Eaches. Florence
died in 1979.
Gertrude died as a girl, of a sleeping sickness. It is said she was
very religious.
Adam's third wife, mother of these girls, was Mary Elizabeth White. She
died shortly after the family home burned down. Don't know if from
injuries of the fire or something else. We just know that after the
fire, he took his family to Linton. Adam was a coal miner. We don't
know if Mary Elizabeth (aka Lizzie) died in OH or IN. Have not found
record of her death either place, to date.
Adam B. Deem was married a total of three times. Do not know names of
wives from other marriages. He had at least two children from the
second marriage: a son named Bert/Burt who eventually became a
pharmacist in Chicago. Daisy married and raised a family in OH.
Adam had a son, name unknown, who also was a coal miner. This son lost
an arm in a mining accident.
Adam also had a brother, that we found a little about: Will Deem - a
grocer in Columbus, OH.
To date, I've have not found this family on any census I've searched.
Not in OH, and not in IN. Soundex, either.
Can anyone in Greene County find a brush with family anywhere along the
way?
Thank you!
Donna (Clem) Arthur
PS Noah & Susie (Deem) Jackson were my husband's grandparents. Because
both parents died before the girls were grown, they were split and sent
here, there and yonder, apparently, and they were young enough at the
time of the fire (approx 1905) to remember very few details.
Beasleys, Powells, are interconnected; Bovenschens, etc. are also
still in the area. The Olive Branch Church near Linton has a cemetery
full of the of these families. Also see bios in the History of
Greene County, l884 for these people. I will be greatly surprised if
you don't hear from a number of living descendants. ~~Dixie

Do you have any idea where in Worthington it was? BTW, do you have
cemetery listings for other Beasleys? I have some cemetery books with
several Beasleys listed if you don't.

Ellie: Thank you for responding to my personal email. I will go public with
this one because you mention that there are several Beasleys still in the
area.
I grew up in Northern Indiana (Jasper County) in the 1930s and 1940s.
My grandmother lived in Worthington. She died there in 1946. My father was
born in Greene County in 1889. Mary Ann Walls Hancock was a daughter of Eli
Walls and Rhoda Beasley who were married in Greene County in 1853. Rhoda,
born 1829, was a daughter of Charles Beasley and Mary "Polly" Jackson. Eli
and Rhoda lived on a farm in Highland Township. Eli was a Baptist preacher
and performed marriages. Late in life they went to live with one of their
daughters in Terre Haute. Rhoda died 16 May 1903. Eli died 29 Nov 1905. They
are buried in Markle Cemetery in Terre Haute.
I have never personally known any Beasleys. If there are Beasleys
currently living in Greene County that have any interest in family history, I
would like to be put in touch with them.

...from the book The Bound Boy by Harold D. Cromwell. [note: the book is
a fictionalized biography of the life of Richard Oglesby Taylor who was
sold by his father at age 11 to be a bound boy. He escaped and made his
way to Kentucky where he was taken in by a couple with no children. The
story had been handed down in the family, and Harold D. Cromwell wrote this
about his great grandfather. According to the author, he searched for
documented items and events and traveled to the sites where the events took
place. Most of the data coincided with his ggrandfather's stories.] It
seems that the names of people are probably correct, although the dialogue
and details are novelized. This book is, unfortunately, no longer in
print. I got it through the lending library, via the Vigo County Public
Library, Terre Haute, IN] I intend to also post this to the Indiana list,
so my apologies to those who will receive it twice.
If any of these names are yours, I *may* have a few details about them from
the book, as I took quite a few notes. Let me know if you want more
information about any of them. I get a LOT of emails, so please put "Some
Greene County names" in the subject line so I can sort them out. ;)
