Has anyone heard of the "McIntosh and Allied
Families Gazette"? It is a family newsletter about
many families from the Greene, Daviess and Lawrence
Co. in Indiana. I have a copy of the 1983 Nov./Dec.
issue. I can't remember when or where I picked it
up and have written to Michael D. Hamersky, the
editor, but my letter comes back marked 'moved' no
forwarding address.
I would love to get in touch with Mr. Hamersky and
find out if he is still writing the newsletter. My
issue contains a lengthy article about "Our Indiana
Uplanders". The main surnames is the article are:
Glenn, Watson, Hollister, Brazzell,Street, Quillen,
Richard, Smith, Humphrey. These were all early
settlers in Greene Co.
I am researching the Brazzell's but the Holister,
Quillen and Street families are also in my line.
Thanks for any help, Karen

I don't know if it is more nearly correct, but the explanation I heard was certainly more satisfying. The first name was bestowed at baptism by the Godparents, and usually dropped.
In German & sometimes other families. :o)

My 7th great-grandfather, Hans Jacob Holtsclaw, named several of his sons Johann (John), as did his father and this tradition was followed by more than 1 of his sons. I suspect this practice was borne out of the need for a male heir to carry on not only the family name but also a traditional given name passed on throughout many generations. During early times, and even on into the 1900s, the mortality rate among children was high so giving several children the same name, and especially boys, seems to have a fairly important reason behind it.

Your response prompted me to research a bit more into above subject.
Our Wm Fields b 1822 m Margaret b 1823 were in the 1860 census of Crawford
Cty w/son Francis M.Fields b 1855 and George, Catherine, John W, Daniel and
Sarah.
This 1860 census info does not match census and obit information on Wm
Fields who m Margaret Santer?
I also located info on that Wm Fields and Margaret:
Wm M. Fields b 13 June 1835 Pulaski Cty KY d 1904 Baker Twp Greene Cty IN
m Margaret Ann Sanders Lauten and had Mary, Laura, John and Nancy.
This Wm Fields b 1835 was in Civil War, is buried in a cem in Crane Mtn
Springs, Model Chapel.
Thanks for info. It proves my Wm and Margaret were not married 1848 in
Greene Cty. Hope the info helps someone else.

Sorry, I lost your post with your e-mail address. I looked for your Hans
Hamilton, could not find him in my cemetery book (eastern counties). There
is an "Old Calvary Cemetery" in Center Twp but no Hamiltons. I did find
something on him in the Greene County History Book.
"John Hamilton was b. in Guernsey County Ohio on 2-14-1832. On 12-11-1851 he
mar. Mary M. Davis. He served in the 97th Reg., Indiana Vol. during the
Civil War. From their mar. were born 11 children. Joe M., Hans, Mary
Masterson, Elvira Hunter, George, James, Louisa Secrest, Henry, Rosetta
Sheilds, Olaf R, and Henry Clay Hamilton. John Hamilton (father) passed away
3-4-1919 and Mary M. died 9-30-1893." It goes on to talk about Henry Clay
Hamilton and his family but no more mention of Hans. I also don't
understand why there are two sons with first names of Henry (maybe an error).
Thats the only mention of Hans in my history book. Pam
