Sharon,
Do you have any names you're looking for in this cemetery? I've not heard of the name Palmer's Prairie in Greene Co. There is a Prairie Chapel Cemetery here, though.
Prairie Chapel is located in Washington Twp. here. (My great-grandma's buried there.) If you have some names, I'll check and see if I can find them listed.
Diane :)
I came to find out about the Brainer Cemetery through my husband. He mentioned to me one day that he had been talking to one of the guys he works with about my plans for him on the weekend. (I had offered to take a couple of shots of a gravestone for a friend but found the stone in bad shape, with a mossy buildup on it that made it hard to read. I told him he was going to help me go out and clean it so I could read it and take a good shot of it. We ended up cleaning several stones, BTW. <g>) The guy started telling him about a Civil War cemetery in Sullivan Co. that the mine was trying to move. I told Mike to ask the guy what the name of it was and where it was located so I could mention it on my genealogy list, knowing how Greene & Sullivan Cos. families were often crossing back & forth. I felt it was something people needed to know about.
When Mike came home yesterday, he gave me a piece of paper with Brainer Cemetery written on it and "300E" and said there had been notices about the plans to move it in the paper and the deadline was either Thursday or Friday. He also said the man told him there was another cemetery called Bennett that the mine wanted to move next. I don't know where he heard this.
My first thought after getting the name of Brainer was to go out and see if I could find it and start looking for stones and transcribing the data. But, since I'm not from Sullivan Co. and it would probably have taken me forever to find it, I thought someone on the list might have more info to share, and am glad to see I was right in my thinking on this. I wish I'd heard about all of this sooner, though.

Does anyone know where this cemetery is? It could be in Greene County or
Sullivan County.
The only thing similar that I could find was a Palmer's Prairie Church. A
cemetery at the church wasn't mentioned.
Thanks for any help!

To answer your question, it absolutely WILL help for concerned individuals who
are not directly related to the people buried at Brainer Cemetery to write to
the Court to object to the disinterment of this cemetery.
The address is on the template found linked from the Brainer Cemetery page
(see URL below).
We've had a problem with the Postal Service returning mail sent to the
Sullivan Superior Court which was preceded by the word "Clerk". Apparently,
the Postal Service believes that reference to the "Clerk" in the address means
that it should go to the County Clerk, but the County Clerk's address has been
changed to a P.O. Box and the forwarding order for that change has now
expired. So the USPS returns mail sent to the "Clerk" of the Sullivan
Superior Court. I can't explain it, but that's what's happened to several
people.
Just use the address of:
Sullivan Superior Court
Room 301
100 Court House Square
Sullivan, Indiana 47882
Make reference in the caption of your letter to:
IN RE: THE PETITION OF BLACK BEAUTY COAL COMPANY TO DISINTER, Sullivan
Superior Court, Cause No. 77DOI-0003-MI-00092
Does anyone on this list know anything further about the mention I saw on last
night's Greene Co. Digest to the removal of the remains from BENNETT Cemetery
near Hymera, in Sullivan Co.? Any clues on the size of this cemetery, who is
buried there, the status of the coal company's efforts to disinter these
remains? This was the first mention I've heard of a similar situation at
Bennett Cemetery.

I am trying to find out what happened to James and Mary CITY THOMPSON.
I believe they were married December 9, 1847 in Greene Co., IN.
I have been unable to find them in the 1850 census. I wonder if they
were living with James' parents, I have been unable to find anything
more about James' family.
I believe they were in Cass twp., Sullivan Co., IN (Who was Cass
anyway? We have a Cass Co., and lots of Cass townships.) in 1860 census
with the following children: Charles b.~1848, Sarah E. b. ~1850 ( I
think she married William C. Pigg 6/13/1869), Steven b. ~1853, Stacy b.
~1856 and Rachel C. b. ~1859.
I haven't found a map of Sullivan Co., can someone tell me where Cass
twp. in Sullivan Co. was during this period? Is it still the same?
In 1870, Rachel C. THOMPSON is listed as an orphan living with Jacob and
Sarah Amelia CITY ROGERS. It looks like Jacob and Sarah moved to
Arkansas either permanently or for a while before 1880. I have no idea
what became of Rachel's siblings during this period. At any rate, if I
have my dates right, when Rachel THOMPSON (my g-grandmother) married
Henry Zackaria NEAL 10/28/1882, she had 2 daughters: Ida THOMPSON b.
before 1882 and Bessie Cleo NEAL b. 8/23/1882. This was Henry's 3rd
marriage and Rachel's first. After Henry died 12/6/1893, Rachel married
Arterman Corbett ROWSE. 3/12/1896. Both these marriages were in Lewis
twp., Clay Co., IN
I have pictures of Rachel C. THOMPSON with 2 sisters who didn't seem to
appear in the 1860 census. One sister is named Alizine. She went off
to Abilene, TX apparently, since that is where the picture was taken.
The other sister was Laura THOMPSON COX according to the notation on the
picture. It is a postcard with no indication of where it was taken.
BTW, is there a Sullivan County list?

I highly recommend the puchase and viewing of a documentary from The
History Channel from the Civil War Journals series regarding preservation of
Civil War battlefields. It is a stirring presentation and a troubling one.
The
same disregard for the past and the sacrifices of people in the past that
turns battlefields into strip malls and race tracks leads developers and
other commercial minded people to destroy memorials. If a cemetery that
holds what now may only be atoms of a human being who put his life on
] the line, or lost a limb, or came home otherwise scarred for life, or never
came
home again is plowed over, disinterred or otherwise damaged forever, then
those
sacrifices are meaningless now. If a cemetery is not a memorial and sacred
ground, what is? Perhaps in another hundred years, those over 8,000 people
including my parents, in Fairview Cemetery at Linton will be seen as a prime
corner for development. --Dixie Kline Richardson
Bev and all,
I'm not sure who can protest the cemetery's move. My own, personal opinion, (which probably doesn't count for much), is that the issue is more than one family's fight or a few families' fight. I think allowing a business or anyone who wants to move a cemetery sets a precedent for others to be moved. I certainly wouldn't want my family to be disturbed and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone. I feel it's an issue that should involve everyone. Whether the courts feel the same way is another matter, though.
Sam, can you tell us anything about who can protest this?
Diane :)
Diane, Would it do any good for the rest of us that has ancestors buried in Sullivan county to protest this. My family the Shepherds and Oliver Rogers family are buried in Sullivan County in the Shepherd Cemetery. When we were there several years ago the family that owns the land that the Cemetery is on said that the coal companies were trying to buy the land that the Shepherd Cemetery is on. At that time they were not willing to sell it to the coal companies.

6/5/2000
For those of you not "up to speed" on the crisis brewing at Brainer Cemetery
at Hymera in Sullivan Co., IN, please go to the webpage at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inpcrp/HallofShame/brainercem.html
We have just received word that there will be a HEARING in Sullivan Superior
Court at 9:00 A.M. on MONDAY, JUNE 5, 2000, on Black Beauty Coal's PETITION TO
DISINTER the remains of 15+/- persons buried at this pioneer family cemetery.
I consider this a victory! The Court did NOT rubber-stamp Black Beauty's
request and the matter has been set for a hearing, which means the Judge will
take into consideration the merits of the company's request and the responses
received by the Court from descendants and the public.
We have a LOT to do in the meantime and this "reprieve" will be invaluable in
allowing us a few extra weeks to find additional possible descendants of the
people buried here. Our efforts continue to try to identify other names
associated with this cemetery.
At this point in time, the only CONFIRMED surname that we have identified as
being buried here is:
McCAMISH
We suspect that there may be persons named PLEW buried here as well, as Zilpha
McCamish, possibly the first burial here, is thought to have been a Plew
before her marriage to John McCamish and members of the Plew family lived next
door to the McCamishes in the early 1800s.
The property was owned at one time by a member of the BRAINER family; hence
the name by which it is now known. We do not know if any persons named
BRAINER are buried there.
The damage to the stones and markers here has been extensive. There are many
fragments lying around and only two bear markings of legible names -- both
McCAMISH. (See webpage above for photos of the stones.)
If you have not already written a letter to the Court expressing your opinions
and concerns about this situation, please go to the webpage above, read the
PETITION TO DISINTER filed by Black Beauty Coal, look at the pictures of the
cemetery, read the facts set out there and read the newspaper accounts that
are linked there.
Then, print out the template we have provided on the webpage (in Adobe Acrobat
PDF format) to help you write your own letter to the Court expressing your
position. The template is provided only to give you a starting place for
composing your own thoughts and you are certainly free to add or take away
from it as you see fit to suit your needs.
I suggest you mail your letters to the Court by Memorial Day weekend, to
permit the Clerk sufficient time to post them all in the file on this matter
in preparation for the 6/5/2000 hearing.
Please send a copy of your letter to the attorney for the Petitioner, at the
address provided in the template.
Thank you for caring.

Subject: [INPCRP] Brainer Cemetery in Sullvan Co., IN is about to be destroyed.
We need your help!!!
The Brainer Cemetery near Hymera in Sullivan Co., IN is about to be destroyed.
The Black Beauty Coal Co., which alleges it owns clear title to the cemetery,
has petitioned the Sullivan Superior Court for permission to excavate the
remains of 15 or more people buried there so that it can explore the site for
coal.
Due to the damage that has already taken place at Brainer Cemetery, we know of
only one CONFIRMED burial here. The surname is McCAMISH. We believe there
may be PLEWs buried here as well. There are estimated by the coal company to
be at least 15 graves here.
This sort of legalized cemetery destruction is nothing new; coal companies do
this in Indiana all the time. What's different in this situation is that we
have in place a network of people who are trying to stop this desecration or,
in the alternative, persuade the Court to compel Black Beauty Coal Co. to
simultaneously disinter and reinter the remains in a respectful manner.
The deadline for filing objections is Thursday, May 4, 2000. We don't want a
repeat of what was done to Rhoads Cemetery and Wilhoit Cemetery!!!
If you are a descendant of a person believed to be buried at Brainer Cemetery
or if you would like to get
involved in protecting this site in this critical battle, please go to the
Brainer Cemetery page at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~inpcrp/HallofShame/brainercem.html
read the information there, read the Petition filed by Black Beauty Coal, read
the linked newspaper accounts and print out a "template" for filing your
objections with the Sullivan Superior Court. Remember: Your objections must
be received by the Court no later than Thursday, May 4th.
Thank you!

<< HYMERA, Ind. — Some Sullivan County residents object to a coal company’s
request to expand into an abandoned cemetery that is the final resting place
for about 15 Civil War veterans.
Brainer Cemetery sits on land owned by Black Beauty Coal Co. But
opponents of the company’s plan to move all of the remains interred there to
another cemetery say Evansville-based Black Beauty should put values before
profits.
The company, which wants to search for new coal reserves, has filed a
petition in Sullivan Superior Court to move the remains to nearby Nyes Chapel
Cemetery, said Jerry Banks, a member of the Sullivan County Cemetery Board.
Pimento resident Jeanne Clutter said if children were to disturb the
graves, “they would be in jail for vandalism. What right do coal companies
have to do that?”

Does Jeanne Clutter subscribe to this list? My paternal grandmother was Fanny
Clutter, and I was always told she was from Sullivan County, MO--however, on
a visit threre, no one had heard of her family. Could it have been she was
from Sullivan County, IN??? She was the daughter of Harvey Clutter and
Rebecca Jane Williams, who was half Delaware Indian.
Thank you,
Carol Bradbury
