DEATH MRS JONES
Within a few years of the century mark, Mrs. Mary Jones, one of the oldest
women in the county and a grandmother of County Sheriff Jones, died Sunday
night at the age of 93 years at her home 1 mile west of South Union. Mrs.
Jones' maiden name was Whaley and she is related to the Whaley families
living near South Union and Stanford. (She) is among the pioneers of this
and Greene County. She, lived on the farm, where she died, since the Civil
War times and her husband, John Jones, has been dead for a number of
years. The following children survive: John W. Jones, Frank Jones, Miss
Bell Jones, who was so unfortunate as to go blind this summer while waiting
upon her aged mother, Mrs. Paris Koontz, Mrs. George May and Mrs. Willis
Cox. Joseph and John Wesley Whaley are among the brothers yet
living. Funeral probably Tuesday afternoon.
Is this James Hunter the one that was married to Mary Clark? She later
married John K Strahla. The only son I have for them in my brief
information for that family is Leonard, b. 1874.

According to Mildred Uland in her book "Gone But Not Forgotten" (pp.269-270) , this is the James S. Hunter who was married to Mary Ann Clark, later the wife of John Strahla. Two other children of James & Mary Ann are buried at Mt. Calvary: Oliver Hunter (1862-1865) and Lizzie Hunter (1869-1870).
Also, my age calculation on Walter was wrong. He was born in 1871 and would have only been six at the time of the explosion. Sorry....'old-timers disease' !!

From Owen County Journal, March 22, l877:
Ed. Journal: I arrived at the late mill site three miles west of Newark,
Greene
County, known as Hunter's mill, last Friday, l6th inst. just after the boiler
exploded and in time to witness one of the most heartrending and sickening
scenes
our country every witnessed. The mutilated bodies of the dead and wounded
were
scattered in every direction. When I arrived there were eleven persons
already
dead and another died in a very short time. There was also several persons
wounded. The names of the dead are: ABSALOM VANDEVENDER whose body
was cut in two; JOHN SPELTS, JOHN WILKIE, JAMES HUNTER, IRVIN RAY,
SARVES BAYS, and a son of GEORGE BENDER, two sons of DAVID BENDER,
and JOHN HUNTER.
The wounded are WILLIAM BLAND, a son of JAMES HUNTER, two sons of Mr.
BLUBAKER, ALFRED HUNTER, AHART HASH, and JOHN HUNTER.
The wounded are all badly hurt and are not expected to recover. Nothing is
known
of as to the cause of the explosion, everything about the boiler and engine
seemed all right a few minutes before the sad occurrence. It is thought the
mortality would not have been so great had it not been hailing and the men
gathered about the boiler.
This sad acccident has cast a gloom over the entire community. Yours, A. Lee

Death of Dr. Howard Lowder
Dr. Howard Lowder, a well known resident of Bloomfield and who has many
relatives in this county, died suddenly of heart trouble Friday. He was
sick only about 5 hours.
Dr. Lowder was a civil war veteran, a member of Co. F, 43rd Indiana, and 69
years old. For years he was a leading Republican, but in 1912 was Greene
County chairman of the Progressive party and a few weeks ago was elected
vice chairman of that party for the Second congressional district. He was
in Bloomington only a few weeks ago at the Progressive convention.
Dr. Lowder was a cousin of James Lowder, a leading College Hill citizen.

Mrs. Alice May Baker, wife of Marcus Baker, died Friday night at her home

followed. She was 36 years old and leaves the husband and the following
children: Mildred, aged 17; Pearl, aged 14; Bonnie, aged 12; Brooks, aged
12; (and) Beryl, aged 7. Mr. and Mrs. Baker formerly lived at Bloomfield
and the husband is section foreman of the Illinois Centeral.
Funeral Sunday at 2:30 o'clock in charge of Rev. Roberts of the Bloomington
Mission where Mrs. Baker held membership. Burial at Rose Hill.
On May 23, 1822, Elizabeth Nutterfee,born July 10, 1810, was married to
Andrew Pittman, in Nelson Co Ky. At a later date, at an unknown location,
she married John Carter Jr. Perhaps at Shenandoah,Va.,in 1842.or perhaps in
Ky., or Indiana. According to my records, she was almost 12 years old when
she married Andrew. Does anyone have any information on either the Pittman,
or the John Carter Jr, at Shenandoah, Va.?
She may have had at least 3 children, with Andrew, Nancy Jane,1829,
Elizabeth Ann,1828, and possibly Matilda 1831.
Any help appreciated. I am trying to batter down a brick wall.
Thanks.

Hi,
I am still searching for any information on family of Jonathon Simpson (1866-1918) and wife Sarah Gilbreath (b.1868). Also on family of Allen Edwards who married Mary Ann Terrell 6/7/1877 and her family.

Okay, now that I have your attention!
I've been beating my head against a brick wall, and today a chip finally
flew off. Maybe you can help me make more chips fly.
Stay with me, here.
In Coalton OH in the 1890's a family by the name of Adam & Mary
Elizabeth (White) Deem had three daughters - Grace, Susie, Florence.
Susie was born in 1892. When she was eleven years old, the girls came
home from school to find that the family home had burned to the ground.
Here's where Linten/Linton comes in. At that point, the family moved to
Linten City. Within just a few months, the father and the mother both
died.
Today, I found the reason (and the town name) when my husband's aunt
found a letter she'd received in 1979. Seems Adam Deem had two children
by a previous marriage, Bert and Daisy. Bert was a coal miner and lived
in Linten, with his wife and children. I found them in the 1910 Census
for Linten - at least Bert, Nora, and the three daughters they had. All
five of them born in Ohio. (Donetta, Jeanie, Susie)
Eventually, Florence and Grace went back to Ohio. Florence married
Joseph Eaches in Lawrence County, OH. Grace married a
Crutchfield/Crichfield. We thought we'd found her in Greene County, but
it apparently was the wrong Grace, although ALMOST everything matched
up.
Grace had a daughter named Zona, who married Tip Campbell. They lived
in Ironton OH in 1979.
At this point, I'd like to find out where Adam & Lizzie Deem are buried
- apparently they are around Linten City, somewhere. One died in the
fall, the other the following spring, but it isn't known which was
first. Also, it was most likely around 1903-1905. And also if anyone
knows anything about Bert & Nora. Or any of these Deems, actually.
Adam and Bert were coalminers, and Bert was reported to have lost an arm
in a mining accident.
Can you help us?
ANYTHING about this family would be appreciated. Oh - by the way.
Susie Deem married Noah Boone Jackson in Greene County in 1911. They
lived in Linten City for awhile, and she worked at the "central office"
. . . was this a telephone exchange, or a railroad depot, or what?
Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!!

Bloomington (IN) Republican Progress, February 4, 1880, p. 3.
On Thursday night of week before last Dr. Conley of Bloomfield, a prominent
citizen and Democratic politician, left his home at midnight, ostensibly to
visit a patient "over the river." In the morning it was discoverd that he
had taken all of his personal effects, even to his gold headed cane. He
leaves a wife and two grown daughters. P. S.--Since the foregoing was
written, a letter has been received from Dr. C., stating that he had
started for Texas to look up a new location and that the pain of parting
from his family might be lessened, he resorted to this
plan. Tender-hearted people in Greene County.

I'm trying to find any information on Wm.BOLDON b. Temperance BUSH 6 Mar
1828 in Owen Co.IN.....I believe that they were living in Owen Co. as I found
a Wm.BOLDON listed there, but I have no info on them after that time frame...
There are several BOLDON / BALDWIN families living in Owen Co. by 1830
census....trying to see if this Wm. might be connected to them....They
migrated from Nelson Co.KY to Owen Co......Their father being Thomas BOLDON /
BALDWIN b. ca1770 MD.
There are several BUSH families living on Owen Co., but only one on the
1820 census....Thomas BUSH and his wife Hannah.....think that they had a son
Richard and possibly Temperance might have been their daughter??
Thinking that they might have moved to a neighboring county and hoping
that someone reading this will have some info on them. If anyone has
anything on these lines, please contact me.

Hello,
I wrote to the Courthouse to get
a copy of a marriage record and
received a letter back today stating
they did not search for records (even
if you know the exact date of the

lives in Greene Co. that could get
me a copy of the marriage record.
More than willing to reimburse for

Surname: Arthur, Thomas, Toler, New, Dixon, Smith, Stephens, Eads
-------------------------
My husband is descended from the Greene County, IN Arthur's, and also have
traced the line back to Thomas "America" Arthur from Ireland, who, with
three sons (at least) came to America and settled in Bedford County, VA.
>From there, they settled in Kentucky, and then came on to Indiana. The
family has also spread throughout the country, with one significant branch
having settled in Oregon, as well as Missouri. Seeing these posts makes
me wonder about the correlation between the Arthur's you are discussing
and the Arthur's that we have been researching and collecting/connecting.
The names listed above recur over and over throughout my husband's family.
His grandfather was James King Arthur (1894 - 1973), ggrandfather Harrison
Barry Arthur (1857-1925), gggrandfather John K. Arthur (1817-1880), then
Nimrod Arthur, Joel, Thomas, John, Thomas. If you are interested in the
