Ty,
I'm sure you have looked here, but just in case. The 1877 Plat of Jefferson
Twp shows some Carter families in sections 20, 21 & 28. Is this in the area
you are currently own? I've linked to the website where I found the plat.
This map shows a few roads that ran through/adjacent to these properties.
Also, this website mentions that Matthews used to be called Cumberland/New
Cumberland, which was moved due to flooding. Old news, I'm sure, but that
was what I was able to come up with. Hope it helps and good luck in your
search.

I live in Jefferson Township, about 4 miles north of Matthews, in an area
called Jefferson Hills, I think. There is an old road that branched off our
road to the north and followed Mud Run creek, and it runs up the middle of
the creek most of the time, because the creek splits in two for a while.
Where the creek first splits, there is an old riveted (pig iron?) pipe
about
5-6 feet in diameter that is covered up on top, since the road would've
gone
over it. In some areas you can still see the embankment, or smooth, flat
area where the road once was. It is just a mere game trail in some areas,
with a lot of trees and brush. If you keep following the trail to the
north/north-east, you will eventually end up at the edge of the
Mississinewa, where I'm not sure if it bridged across to connect with a
road
on the other side of the river, or if it turned west and continued on along
the river. I am interested in the history of this road, and how it was
used,
when it was built and abandoned, etc.
The land is/was owned by the Carters, and still is in the same
family, only under the Breedlove name, because of marriage. In 5 years it
will be eligible for the Homestead status. If anybody knows about this road
or any information about this area, I will appreciate it a lot.
Thanks,
Ty Breedlove
