My grandfather had to put my great-grandmother there because he was still
single and trying to run the family farm and she became increasingly
confused and kept running away. He would have to stop farming and go look
for her. I think she just had good old-fashioned senility or possibly
Alzheimers, but in those days, there were no nursing homes nearby that he
could take her to.

I'd just like to mention here that many people who were put in
these
institutions were there for reasons other than insanity. There were many
diseases that were, at that time, incurable. One of my grt grandfathers
died in the Richmond Hospital (Indiana State Mental Hospital) but he died of
a kidney disease. That kidney disease slowly poisons a person because the
impurities in the blood are no longer filtered out. It made patients do
"crazy" things. Since there was no cure at that time, the only logical
place for the people was a mental hospital. This is probably true in more
cases than we realize.

My great-grandmother died at the one in Richmond, and also one of my
Ferguson ancestors and on both of their death certificates it says they
died
at the Eastern Indiana Hospital for the Insane.
