Hey, all!
You might want to check out this website: RAOGK, Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness:
http://www.raogk.org/listing.htm
There are searchers who will lookup and take pictures for those looking for their
ancestors; the searchers are indexed by county.
I know, I'm a volunteer for that site, except I live in Knox County, Ohio. I would
do it if I lived in Grant Co., and I know that there are people who do acts of kindness
for researchers!

somebody checked the obituaries with no luck about a year ago. I think I had
them check on the one who was buried in 1908? can't remember for sure...
The information I have about Lewis Jonesis That he was living in Marion in
1907 (according to his daughter's marriage application) and by 1915 (his
other daughter's marriage application) he was deceased. I am working on the
theory that he is the Lewis T. Jones on the 1910 census in the soldiers
home, because there was a Lewis Ths. Jones on the 1880 census in the same
town as his daughter Bertha was born in 1887. And the wife's name was
Amanda(name of Bertha's mother).
So the information seems to fit but I was hoping to find information on his
next of kin so I could be sure.
If you wanted to help look for the obituary that would be great, but I know
since I don't really have the death date narrowed down that it might be a
little time consumming... I can offer to reimburse you for any copying fees,
parking etc... But If you can't do it I understand.
Thank you,
Dawna, in oregon

Hello: I had the same problem with a Kilgore I was trying to find. I
knew he was living at the Home, but he was not buried there. I finally
found him in the obits at the Marion Public Library. He was buried by his
second or third wife but there was no stone. Do you have someone close to
Marion to look for you? I don't live too far away. Eight miles. Let me
know. Linda

Dawna,
Marion is my hometown, but I haven't lived there in many years, and when I do go there
it's for a family visit,
which doesn't leave time for a trip to the library.
Your best bet might be to write to the Grant County Clerk, Court House, Marion, IN 46952,
and request
photocopies of the complete estate settlement of the Lewis JONES who died in 1908. Also
request the
same for any other Lewis or Louis JONES who died in Grant Co. between 1 Jan. 1910 and the
date of
his daughter's 1915 marriage. (This is not a large request - the probate volumes are
usually indexed
and if they're not, their contents are still in alphabetical and chronological order,
so it's very easy to
look up.) Enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope and a check for, say, $10.
Death and probate records are considered to be "primary" records - records made
close to the event
by the person involved or a close relative or a government office, and are considered to
be the most
accurate type of record. Secondary records such as county histories, obits, etc., are
often less accurate.
So, primary records are considered to be proof and secondary records often are not.
I certainly don't want to offend you by giving unasked-for genealogy lessons; I just
don't know whether
you've been doing research for a week or for 20 years, so I've put in some how-to,
why-to information!
Let me know if the above doesn't work for you - there's always the possibility of
hiring an on-site
person to help.
Bobbi

Hey Folks,
A note here from a former Hoosier.........who returns to Wabash every year.
I called the Clerk's Office in Marion three weeks ago myself asking the
procedure for requesting genealogy information (wills & such). The woman who
answered the phone let out a big groan - I laughed and asked if they had been
bothered by genealogists and she said yes. She suggested I email my request,
giving my home address, and when THEY HAD TIME, they would look up my stuff
and mail it to me along with a bill. I am still waiting, but optimistic.

Isn't is a shame that so many of the government servants have to act that
way. I was in an office and one of the ladies(?) remarked to another "It's
too bad Jane go stuck with that stuff to look up, she has a lot of work to
get done." I was not a happy person upon hearing that so I ask for more
information. The gal helping me didn't seem to mind doing it.
