Secretary Hawn (1831-1883) was a native of Milford, Ohio, and
resided in Leavenworth, Crawford
County, when elected. He enlisted as a sixteen year old in the
Mexican War, and was a surgeon in the
49th Infantry and 144th Infantry during the Civil War. Dr. Hawn was
described as having "an exceedingly
generous and genial nature" and "constantly responding to the
needs
of others." He was a large man in
all respects, and weighed in at 340 pounds during much of his adult
life. After his tenure as Secretary of
State, he served briefly as Secretary of the Indiana State Board of
Health from March 1883 until his
death on September 6, 1883.36
