Tombstones found along river had been hauled from dealer /
Several truckloads of tombstones that were found along the banks of the
White River were unused markers that apparently came from a Muncie
headstone dealer. Brian Whittaker, president of Wearly Monument Co.,
said he hired a contractor more than a month ago to haul away "three or
four truckloads" of tombstones that had been accumulating since 1957.
Most were set aside because they had been replaced by larger monuments
or were marred by spelling errors, Whittaker said. He said a property
owner who received the tombstones from the contractor might have dumped
them. The tombstones were found along the river in western Delaware
County earlier this month by a canoeist, who alerted the county
commissioners. Ande Gromosky, office manager for the commissioners, said
Wednesday a Wearly representative contacted her and indicated the stones
had come from that business. Troy Caldwell, a Kokomo monument
maker and president of the Indiana Monument Builders Association, said
state law governs how monuments are removed from cemeteries but does not
regulate their disposal. Pat Wilhoite of Muncie-based Wilhoite
Monuments said her company breaks up unused monuments so they can be
discarded or used as filler at building sites.
