Updated Genelines
Recently I mentioned how important it is to insert your
ancestor into a historical timeline. It gives us a better
understanding of why an ancestor may have moved, or not
moved, and perhaps why he only lived a short time.
Sometimes it takes seeing that information in a timeline to
bring it into focus. At the time, I mentioned the Genelines
software. They have just announced a new version of the
program. The biggest news is that Genelines is now
compatible with PAF, version 5.0.
As many of you know, PAF is a free genealogy program. It
is available for download from the FamilySearch web site
(
www.familysearch.org). Once at the FamilySearch site,
you will see a link labeled Order/Download Products, on
the site's front page. This will take you to a link for
downloading PAF 5.0.
Genelines can be used by genealogists, even if they don't
use PAF as their genealogy software.
Using Genelines, genealogy enthusiasts can display full-
color, historical timeline charts that tell their family story in
a completely different way. With this new version 1.3
release, Genelines can now directly read family history files
created in PAF versions 3 to 5, Family Tree Maker® (FTM)
versions 4 and up, as well as GEDCOM files created using
other genealogy programs.
Since the first release of Genelines 1.0 in December 1998, a
loyal following of users have been creating and sharing
their own history files on Progeny's web site. By changing
the historical backdrops that set the stage for the personal
life drama of a given family member, Genelines users are
literally able to see their ancestors' lives in time. A
convenient History File Maker utility, distributed free on
Progeny's web site, facilitates the development of these
history files by the online Genelines community.
Genelines has two types of timeline charts two
biographical and three relationship charts for a total of five
different views of a genealogy database. No other software
or printed materials currently available can provide the
same ancestral snapshots as these innovative charts.
Genelines operates on Windows 95/98/NT, and requires 8
MB RAM.
Genelines version 1.3 is available free to registered
Genelines users, and can be downloaded at
(
www.progenysoftware.com). New users may purchase
Genelines 1.3 for $29.95 USD (plus shipping) online from
Progeny Software or by calling 1-800-565-0018. Genelines
is also available through a network of genealogy dealers
across North America and abroad.
