Edward B. Tucker, of Richland townsihp, was born in Ogborough, England
, January 6, 1805. When 26 years old he came to this country, landing at
Philadelphia, where he lived until 1839. After a couple of years in Wayne
County, Indiana, he came to Grant, where he still resides, a prosperous farmer and
an excellent man. He was married in Philadelphia to Mrs. Sarah Murray in 1836.
Five children were born to them two of who died. Mr. Tucker learned
shoemaking and worked at it many years after coming to this county. Early in life
Mr. Tucker drank occasionally. He does not use tobacco. Mr. Tucker is still in
vigorous health and votes the Republican ticket straight. He is not a member
of any church.
George White, born in Ireland, March 1807, and came to America in
1813. The vessel bringing him over with the other emigrants was captured by a
British cruiser, and the prisoners sent to Halifax, where they were set free.
Mr. White and his parents lived there ten years when they emigrated to the
United States and in 1817 came to Harrison county, Indiana, where Mr. White learned
the saddlery trade and worked at it several years. In 1840 he moved to
Marion and engaged in the dry goods business and retired about 10 years ago. Mr.
White bears his age remarkably well. He has always been temperate, but uses
tobacco for smoking sparingly. He belongs to the M. E. Church and is a strong
Republican.
Jacob Ring was born in Pennsylgania in 1806 and moved to this county
in 1848. Has used tobacco sparingly since a boy, but never used intoxicating
liquors. He was a Republican until the Prohibition party was organized when he
changed. He is a member of the Wesleyan church. This wife, 76 years of age,
still lives with him. Mr. Ring moved to Marion several years ago from his
farm east of town.
John Miller of Sweetser, was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, 82 years
ago and has lived in his present home seven years. After 50 years use of
tobacco he "swore off" last New Years, and is a teetotaler. In politics he is a
strong Republican and says he will continue one as long as he lives.
Elias Eviston was born February 11, 1808, in Guernsey county, Ohio.
He lived there about 50 years and then moved to Grant county and engaged in
farming. He is a Republican and has been a Medhodist for 40 years. Uses neither
tobacco nor liquor. He is the father of nine children, only one of
whom--Mrs. Robert Horne--is living. Sixty years ago he was married to Miss Jane
Dickerosn, with whom he has lived happily ever since. She is now 78 years old. His
parents came from Virginia, and foreparents from Ireland.
William R. Jackson of Washington township, was born in Miami county,
Ohio,
September 6, 1807. He is the youngest son in a family of seven children. In
1840 Mr. Jackson came to Grant county and located 160 acres near where he now
lives. He was married 60 years ago to Miss Delila Lucas. Mr. Jackson is a
devout member of the U.B. church and a faithful Republican. He has led a pure
and useful life.
Henry Babb, of Sims townsip, was born in Green county, Tennessee,
January 23, 1807. When a young man he learned balcksmithing. He first moved to
Clinton county, Ohio, and in 1849 came to Indiana where he bought 280 acres of
land in the "reserve." He followed this trade until 1883. In 1823 he married
Miss Sarah Haines with whom he lived happily 57 years. He is still a hearty
old man. In politics he is a Democrat.
