I'm not related, but I did a quick search of the 1880 census and found two
Catherine Longs b abt 1834 (+/- 2 years) with spouses named William.
In Monroe Twp., Morgan Co, IN:
Wm K. LONG Self M Male W 58 KY Farmer KY VA
Catharine LONG Wife M Female W 46 IN Keeping House KY KY
Rilda M. LONG Dau S Female W 24 IN At Home KY IN
Otis S. LONG Son S Male W 16 IN Works On Farm KY IN
Dora E. LONG Dau S Female W 14 IN At Home KY IN
Margaret A. LONG Dau S Female W 10 IN At Home KY IN
In Benton Twp., Taylor Co., IA:
William M.P. LONG Self M Male W 78 VA Farmer MA KY
Catherine A. LONG Wife M Female W 46 NY Keeping House PA
PA
As for the VA vs KY discrepancy in Catharine's father's birthplace, remember
that Virginia was once much larger (extending to the Mississipi River, if I
recall correctly). Thus the father might have been born in the KY part of
VA.

Subject: Stephenson, Long
I have just learned that some of my Stephenson, Long ancestors came to
Van
Buren Twp, Grant Co during the 1870s. Some of the Long relatives were there
already.
Catherine Stephenson married William Long in Starke Co IN 27 Jul 1854. He
was quite a bit older than Catherine. His first wife, Harriett Brandon had
died leaving three sons. Catherine was stepmother to two of them (Willam
and Alexander). William Long also had a brother, Ellis, who married
Malinda Huff 8 Jun 1843 in Grant Co IN but lived in Starke Co IN near
William and Catherine.
Catherine's father, Joseph Stephenson was born 1810/1811 in VA. My first
record of him is his marrieage 12 Feb 1833 to Delilah Frey (Fry) in Logan
Co OH. They had 10 children there (Catherine was first born in 1834) I
have never found Joseph Stephenson's birthplace in VA nor any siblings. I
have been searching for almost 20 years for this elusive gentleman to no
avail!
The interesting thing is that Joseph S, William Long and Ellis Long all
sell their respective properties in Jasper and Starke Co IN and relocated
near each other in IL!! On the 1870 Census, Joseph Stephenson and his 3
unmarried daughters are in Hamilton Co IL. Ellis Long is there also, near
Joseph.
Joseph's daughter Catherine, her husband William Long and their 2 children
are not far away in Wayne Co IL.
All three families disappear in the 1880 Census. I have recently learned
that William Long went to Grant Co IN where he died.
My great wish is that someone will know of these people and can help me
put the pieces together. I learned online that a Winters Family Tree in
Rootsweb is related to the Long line. They report that William died there
in 1899 and that Catherine died in 1878 (I think) but it does not say
where she died.
I'm also hoping that good old Joseph Stephenson will show up there also.
I'm happy to share. I have been back to OH and IN several times searching
but never to Grant Co.
Thanks to all,
Nancy Stephenson Guenther
