Isaac Newton Anderson, one of the pioneer settlers of the town of Wells and a veteran of
the war of the Rebellion, passed peacefully away Monday shortly before noon at the home of
his daughter, Mrs. W.D. Thatcher on First Ave.South. His death resulted from a general
debility resulting from his advanced age.
The deceased was born in Guernsey county, Ohio, and at the time of his death was in
his eighty-fourth year. When a boy he removed with his parents to Grant Co. Ind. where he
grew to manhood and shere in 1849 he was married to Miss Lydia Roberds, daughter of the
late Mr. and Mrs. William Roberds, also pioneer settlers of the town of Wells.
Mr. and Mrs. Anderson and family came to Minnesota in 1855 and he purchased a farm in
section nine, town of Wells on which he resided until about fifteen years ago, when he
sold his homestead and has since then resided in this city. Mrs. Anderson died ten years
ago.
When in 1862, President Lincoln issued a call for 600,000 men to preserve the Union
and save the national capital. Mr. Anderson left his wife, little family and pleasant farm
home and enlisted in Co.B. Eighth regiment, Minnesota Volunteers, Nov. 11,1862. Owing to
the depredations of the Sioux Indians following the Sioux massacre in Western Minnesota in
August, 1862, the regiment was ordered to join Sibley's command. The regiment rook
active part in Sibley's expedition against the Sioux in western Minnesota and the
Dakotas in 1862 and 1863 and Sully's expedition west of the Missouri in 1864. In 1864
the Eighth regiment was ordered south and soon after participated in the batle of
Murfreesboro. The regiment then joined Sherman's army, marched to the sea and took
part in the principal battles fought on the historic march. Mr. Anderson was promoted
from corporal to sargeant. He was honorable dischared from service July 11,1865 and
returned to his family and home.
The deceased was a man of many excellent traits of character. He was honest in his
dealings with his fellowmen, a loyal citizen, a good soldier, husband and father and a
genial companion. He was a member of Michael Cook Post, G.A.R. of this city.
Mr. Anderson is survived by four daughters and one son. The daughters are Mrs. a.L.
Adams, Minneapolis, Mrs. Victor Chappuis, Mrs. W. D. Thatcher and Mrs. Thos. A. Jones of
Faribault. The son is Elias Anderson also a resident of this city.
The funeral will take place today at 2 o'clock from the residence of W. D.
Thatcher and will be under the auspices of Michael Cook Post, G.A.R. Funeral services
will be conducted by rev. e.H. Goodell, pastor of the first M.C. church. The remains will
be interred in Oak Ridge cemetery.

of his family.
