Daniel Elliot has been working hard on the INGenWeb - Gibson Co. site. He has links to
both Stormont and Tartt's history books online. You can read the full text of either
book online.

He's also photographing tombstones at all the Gibson Co cemeteries. A GREAT resource
for anyone doing research. Kudos to Daniel!

I have a copy of the "Albert Mills" write up from the "History of Gibson
County" book by Gil Stormont, dated 1914, pages 522-525. The information
covers four typed pages but I'll include some of the key points in case it
helps others researching the Mills family in Gibson County. I am
researching the Durston Mills line in Gibson County.
"...Albert Mills, who was born about five miles east of Princeton, Gibson
county, Indiana on May 5, 1843, was the son of Durston and Louisa
(Stapleton) Mills. Durston Mills, born June 5, 1804 in Kennebec county,
Maine and married on December 16 1827 to Louisa Stapleton, who was born on
April 28, 1808 in Robinson County, Tennessee. Albert's paternal
grandfather, James Mills, was born in Kennebec county, Maine in 1767 and
married Rachael Courson, who was born in Maine in 1769, their marriage
occurring in 1789. Their children were: Effie, b. in 1790, Richard, b in
1792, Zyasa, b. 1794, Asa, b 1796, Bracket, b. 1798, Daniel, b. 1800, James
b. 1802, Durston b. 1804, Mary b. 1808, Samuel b. 1810 and Caroline b. 1812.
"
"Albert's grandfather, James Mills, with his wife and children, left Maine
in October 1810 and came to Indiana in 1811, the long and tiresome journey
from Maine being they came by boat to Evansville, then known as Smithville,
thence by wagon to Hudelson farm. After a while they moved to White Oak
Hills, four miles east of Princeton, where James Mills bought eight hundred
acres of timberland. Eventually they located on what is now known as the
Hyslop farm on the Patoka river. "
"Albert's father, Durston Mills was married in November 1827 and soon
afterward located on one hundred and twenty acres of land in what is now
Center township, Gibson County, which he improved and developed into a good
farm and which he operated until his death which occurred on May 14, 1875,
his widow died in 1882. "
"It is stated that Albert's maternal grandmother, Louisa (Stapleton) Mills
was a daughter of Joshua Stapleton who was born on January 28, 1782 and who
married Elizabeth Elmore, whose birth occurred on July 10, 1788. They came
from Robinson county, Tennessee to Gibson county, Indiania in 1816, settling
five miles east of Princeton in the woods where they obtained a tract of
wild land and here they established their permanent home. . ."

Subject: [INGIBSON] MILLS Land in Gibson County Indiana
I took a quick look at my book "Family Maps of Gibson County,
Indiana" by
Gregory A. Boyd, J.D., Arphax Publishing Co.
www.arphax.com. The main
list
of surnames in Gibson County Patents [the book data is based on Bureau of
Land Management General Land Office original land patents] shows MILLS has
six land parcels. Three parcels are in map group 5 2nd PM 1-S 10-W
[meridian/township/range]. Two parcels are in map group 19 2nd PM 3-S
10-W. One parcel is in map group 13 2nd PM 2-S 9-W. It appears James
MILLS
is the MILLS on Patent Map Group 5 with three parcels. It is in Section
23
and dates issued are 1835-09-05 and 1837-08-01. What is nice about these
maps is you can see their neighbors on the map. In Section 23, his
neighbors are John Marshall and John Amos. Just over the line into
Section
22 next to him is Robert Tales and John Lance. The MILLS in map group 19
is Samuel C. Mills. The MILLS in map group 13 is Daniel Mills. I can
give
you more details on these two MILLS if you need them.
I really like these map books! Note: I do not have MILLS in my family
[yet] ha.
