Sue,
You may also want to check out Warrick County, Indiana. The land
description you give (Section 3, Township 4 South, Range 9 West)
is located on the south side of Barton Township (Gibson County),
in Warrick County. The Wabash-Erie Canal did pass through this
area, so your info is likely correct.
Also you may wish to check for POTTER relatives in Pike County.
There is a family living about 3-4 miles east of Oakland City
(Gibson County) and about 13 miles north of the land you
reference, but they reside in Pike County. As to the MARSHALL
family, there are still several MARSHALLs in the area. You
should have luck in reaching some of these.
Good luck!
Chawn

Subject: POTTER and MARSHALLl in Gibson Co
Hello,
I am glad to see this new list!!! I am researching the Thomas
POTTER (b.
1799 in NC) family who were in Gibson Co. by the early 1820's.
They then
moved on to Marion Co. IL c1853 although family rumor has it
that a couple
of sons may have stayed. Would love to contact anyone else
working on this
family or the family of his wife Mary Ann MARSHALL (b. 1806).
They were
married 3 Nov. 1825 in Gibson Co. Thomas' parents Thomas and
Ruth POTTER
may also have lived in Gibson Co. I have that Mary Ann's
brothers were Dr.
Hubbard Marshall and Van Randolph Mashall. and her oldest sister
was Savilla
Marshall Jones. A Thomas Potter bought land in Section 3, T 4S,
R 9W. In
a letter sent to a former family researcher, mention was made
that the
family moved to IL when a canal was being built next to their
land and the
neighborhood got a little too wild.
Names:
Thomas POTTER and Mary Ann MARSHALL
