I will try to add some info to this discussion. Please forgive
me if some of the following is a restatement of other's posts.
As Delanie stated, the Gibson County Historical Society (GCHS)
dues are $12 per year (family membership). In addition to this,
the Society meets monthly on the third Thursday of the month in
locations throughout Gibson County. They also publish a monthly
newsletter. They allow members to submit queries to the
newsletter and publish them as space permits. Each month
articles span a number of topics including transcripts of public
records, re-prints of old newspaper articles, excerpts from
published history articles, etc. As was stated, past issues of
the newsletter are available for $1.25 per issue plus $0.33
postage. The Society also has published and has available
several volumes of cemetery directories, census transcripts,
county atlas re-prints, and other items of interest. The mailing
address of the Society is:
Gibson County Historical Society, Inc.
P.O. Box 516
Princeton, IN 47670-0516
I am not aware of the Society having an official presence on the
Web, but there are members of the Board of Directors who are
active on the Web. I have not seen their presence on this list
yet though.
The Society works quite closely with the genealogical section of
the Princeton Public Library. The genealogical room at the
Library is quite "complete" and is fortunate to have quite a
collection of resources. Many old county records have been
transferred to the Library, and can be accessed there. However,
as far as I am aware, it is still necessary to visit the County
Health Department for all death certificates. The genealogical
room is "staffed" by two extremely nice and helpful ladies -
Betty and Bonnie, along with other volunteers. If you plan on
visiting, you may wish to call ahead to confirm the availability
of the room, as it is not open full time.
I do believe that the Library does have a presence on the
internet, and think just recently they have added a computer with
internet access in the genealogical room. I will try to confirm
this. I am not sure if they have e-mail though.
I do know that they try to handle queries as time permits. I
also believe the GCHS will also try to answer queries or forward
them to the ladies in the Library to be answered. The Library
can be reached at:
Princeton Public Library
130 S. Hart Street
Princeton, IN 47670
(812) 385-4464
There are at least three other public libraries in the County
along with the Oakland City University Library. The Princeton
Library has most of the historical information that can be found
in the other libraries, but occasionally, there is information in
one of the others, which is local to that community, that may not
be in the Princeton Library. Following is the contact
information for the other three public libraries:
Fort Branch Public Library
107 E. Locust Street
Fort Branch, IN 47648
(812) 753-4212
Oakland City/Columbia Township Public Library
210 S. Main Street
Oakland City, IN 47660
(812) 749-3559
Owensville Public Library
Public Square
Owensville, IN 47665
(812) 724-3335
Many people may not be aware that each county in Indiana is
supposed to have a County Historical Officer (or similar title),
who serves as a liaison between the State and the county
governments, societies, etc. Gibson County is represented by a
lady named Alvetta Wallace. Information and queries regarding
historical buildings, state historical markers, etc., should be
directed to her.
Hope this helps. Again, I will try to confirm if the Princeton
Library has a computer and internet access.
