Ernie,
Peter Hanks, father of Rev. William Hanks, is said to be buried in
Gibson County although records of him are very obscure.

frontiers 1778-1783 - Peter Hanks
Fifth Series Vol. IV, page 711 - Soldiers of the Revoulution - Continental
Line - Washington County - Peter Hanks, private
There seems to be no official record of his death or burial in Gibson
County. It is said that he died in Gibson County in 1830 while living with
his granddaughter Ruth Hanks Marshall (Ruth was married to Hubbard
Marshall.) Recent inquiries that I have made regarding this reveal that this
information was passed down in the Marshall family. During the 1950's
&1960's Adin Baber had done a great deal of research on the Hanks family
primarily in regards to the parentage of Nancy Hanks Lincoln. Several books
were published by Baber and included information about Peter. Some of this
information was from the Marshall family records. On page 144 of "Nancy
Hanks of Undistinguished Families" published in 1960 I find the only
reference about where Peter may be buried.
(Re; family traditions that indicate Peter as the father of Nancy Hanks
Lincoln and investigation of the same.)
" For this purpose, people around Princeton and in Gibson County, Indiana,
have been interviewed, where Peter lived out his last years, and no
tradition has been uncovered there. Six miles east of Princeton, an old
graveyard is pointed out where Peter Hanks and a few other Revolutionary War
soldiers are supossed to be buried; but never a word about any connection of
a Hanks-Lincoln is vouchsafed." - end of quote
For the record, Baber eliminates Peter as father of Nancy Hanks Lincoln.
Although Peter fit nearly all of the criteria, the fact that Nancy was
orphaned and that Peter lived until 1830, he could not have been her father.
(Believe it or not, I still have not convinced some of my family of this.)
Any idea what cemetery this may be refering to?
Thanks,
Ron Hanks
