I appreciate you all jumping right in to help me with Andrew Thompson!
I'm looking into the Iowa/Indiana problem. I had decided that the Ia in the
1850 census in Wabash County did mean Indiana, not Iowa, because the parents
of Harriet Degan, Andrew's new wife, are listed on the previous page (Henry
and Jane Lovellette Degan), and I understand from my grandmother's Bible
that Henry and Jane were born in Indiana even thought the census says Ia. I
think to this census taker Ia meant Indiana. And, I have looked for possible
family for Andrew Thompson in Iowa but have found no leads so far.
I cannot find Menard County, Illinois, in my map guide to censuses. When
and where was it? Is it Randolph County? Was that part of Iowa territory at
one time? There seem to be connections between the SW part of Indiana and
Kaskaskia and Menard Illinois areas.
My guess is that Andrew's family is right under my nose and I just haven't
found his parents yet. His father could indeed be Robert or Samuel
Thompson, IF he was from Gibson County. There are Thompsons in many places
in Indiana. I've been looking at Pike County, Daviess, Knox, even
Montgomery. And of course he could be part of a very large Thompson family
spread out over several counties as well.
One lead in Knox County was a Dorcas Thompson, b 1820, who married Minard
Smith(son of Daniel Smith), then married Samuel R. Alexander, a Presbyterian
minister. In the 1860 census, Dorcas and Samuel have a Henry R. Thompson
living with them in Knox County. Andrew Thompson had a son named Henry R.
Thompson who would have been the same age as this Henry R., 8. In the same
census, Andrew's daughter, Laura Ann Thompson, 6, is living with her
grandparents Jane and Henry Degan, but Henry R. Thompson is not with her.
I'm guessing that Andrew and Harriet both died between 1854, Laura's birth
year, and 1860, the census year in which we find Laura and Henry separated.
IF the Henry R. Thompson in Knox County is the boy I'm looking for, then the
Dorcas Thompson Smith Alexander he is living with in 1860 COULD be a sister
to my Andrew, and maybe I will find a connection there, though I haven't yet
found the parents of Dorcas Thompson!!! You can see I'm coming at Andrew
from as many directions as I can think of. I've already chased other
Thompson families in circles to no avail!
I truly appreciate all your suggestions and only ask for more! Or redirect
my thoughts...
Linda

I agree it is likely Iowa if found in the Iowa census and Indiana if found
in the Indiana census for 1850. But you CANNOT assume either if found in
another state. A large number of Gibson Co., IN folks migrated to Menard
Co., IL and they are all IA in that census.

The 1850 census is sometimes confusing because Iowa used Ia and
Indiana
also used Ia -- but usually it is for Iowa unless it was written in
Indiana (at least this is what I have found from countless readings of
various states in that year).
Since it shows Ia that may also mean that the parents were born Iowa and
not In.
Did you find any later census' which shows his parents as being born in
Indiana?
