Hi Hazel and everyone
Here is some info about Gottlieb Stefel:
He is supposed to be in USA but can't seem to find him in 1850 census where he should
be with his parents -- closest I find is one similar name down in Harris Co, Texas (which
is good possibility since so many of the Germany persons came in here from ships unloading
in the cities surrounding the Gulf of Mexico. If this is him then here is family and
maybe this and the following census stuff will help Hazel find if he is related to her
gr-grandfather or not:
Oh -- first the marriage:

Fifteenth Light Battery
INDIANA
(3-YEARS)
Fifteenth Light Battery. -- Capts., John C. H. Von Schlen,
Alonzo D. Harvey.
This battery was organized at Indianapolis in the winter of
1861 and spring of 1862 and was on duty guarding prisoners in
that city until July of that year.
It was mustered in July 5, 1862, and left the state the same
day for Harper's Ferry, Va. With the other forces at that
point the battery was captured by Stonewall Jackson in
September, the members being paroled and sent to Camp Douglas.
Upon being exchanged they returned to Indianapolis, where they
were fitted out with new guns. In March, 1863, the battery
proceeded to Louisville and joined the pursuit of Morgan
through Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio, and after his capture
moved into east Tennessee, being engaged with the enemy at
Kingston, Calhoun, Philadelphia and Loudon in August and
September.
(and this goes on about places and battles the 15th IN INF Lt Battery were in during the
civil war)

Anyway, I do hope that this can help Hazel or others serching Steifel.
