Naturalizations are usually done through the court system and since
this is a federal item it usually is done by a federal court judge.
Back in the early 1800s they had these judges who would hold court on
specific days of the week or every so often each month in each of the
main towns of a county. I believe back in the 1850 timeframe this was
held in the circuit court records and these are held by counties as
well as copies went to the federal court system naturalization place,
wherever that was for the area.
Sorry not much help -- was your ancestor Pohl still alive when it
asked on the census whether they were naturalized or not? That
sometimes helps because if it gives a date or time they entered USA it
sometimes helps knowing where they asked to be naturalized (intention)
and then where they later were naturalized.
