Hi List,
This is a multi-part message. Please bear with me as I try to explain some
things.
Anna Matthews, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Malone) Matthews, married
James Strickland at Gibson county July 4, 1870.
My first question.
Does anyone know which of the following two James Stricklands this was? Or maybe
even a third one.
The James Strickland, called M.D., born April 13, 1846 and died August 12, 1872,
or
James Strickland, born March 3, 1834 and died January 27, 1896. Both these
James Stricklands are buried in the Providence cemetery, Gibson County. It's
even possible there was a third James Strickland.
Now, there was an Anna Strickland who married Ralph SURBATT at Gibson county
June 7, 1878.
If Anna Matthews was married to the James Strickland who died in 1872 then she
would have been correctly called Anna Strickland in the marriage to Ralph
Surbatt, assuming it is the same Anna.
If she was married to the James Strickland who was born March 3, 1834 this would
imply they were divorced and that the James Strickland who married Mary M.
McDaniel September 1, 1874 was probably marrying after the divorce, again
assuming it was the James who married Anna Matthews.
Any help or thoughts appreciated.
Now, an even more perplexing question.
Does anyone know anything about a Surbatt family? I've gone to the internet
search engines and there is no one with the name Surbatt listed in the US.
Since the name Surbatt is from a typed marriage record does anyone familiar with
the Gibson families have any idea what name could have been corrupted into
Surbatt?
Thanks for taking time to try to understand what I was trying to say.
Any help appreciated.
