Greetings,
I agree, the county history is a valuable thing, and did not intend
to criticize it, but just point out that its information is not all
correct based on facts. I don't pretend to have all the facts on this
subject, either, but have been studying the subject for nearly 30 years,
and have several original source documents at my disposal, including
about 200 church records, 12,000 association minutes (including
collections of the Salem Regular Baptist association and Wabash District
association. I have a copy of the 1822 constitutional minutes of Salem,
and 1821 minutes of Wabash District from which the Salem was formed.
Wabash District was org. in 1809 by five churches, some of which were
named in this county history article as being organized at a date later
than 1809 which I conclude could not be correct. Also Elder William
Hanks was ordained in 1817. I've had contact with descendants of James
Martin, Lemuel Potter, Elihu Holcombe, the Stricklands, and others who
were very early in the area, and have studied every book and article I
could find on the actions that separated or divided the Baptists in the
area.
Will close for now. Wishing all a prosperous and happy season and
new year.
Robert Webb
