Subject: [DUKES] William E. Dukes
William E. Dukes is my great-greatgrandfather. Family tradition is that he
and Frances had at least 5 children. I have very little information on this
family. William died when my greatgrandfather was only 16, and my
greatgrandfather was never known to speak of his family. Why not, nobody
knows.
What I know of William E. is that he was born in Fulton county Indiana 1846
or 1848. 1848 if you go by the 1850 Fulton county census, 1846 if you go by
his Civil War enlistment. It is possible he may have "fibbed" on his age to
join the war effort. He died March 3,1902 Salt Creek township, Mason county,
Illinois. He married Frances Anne (Burns, Burnes, Burness depending on who
is asked!) February 27,1881 Macon county Illinois. My greatgrandfather
Andrew Edward Dukes was born in Logan county July 20,1886. The only child I
know much of. I have a newspaper clipping from 1942 stating that a Mary
Grady visited her brother Andrew after 40 years apart. This Mary Grady was
said to be from Michigan, but moving to California.
William E. was the son of Andrew Eslinger Dukes and Mary J. Troutman. One of
six boys. Peter P. born 1851, Marion born 1852, Thomas born 1859, Ulysses
born December 9,1861 died July 28,1936, and Charles born 1866. All born
near Kewanna, Fulton county Indiana. I have been told of a stone in a
Kewanna cemetary for a Thomas D. Dukes 1859-1916 wife Elizabeth A.
1862-1948.
These are pasted parts of a message sent to another list, that I am sharing
with this list in case others may have or could use the info.
Thanx!
Any Fulton county Dukes information greatly appreciated. Near as I can tell
the Dukes family farm was about 3 to 3 1/2 miles north of Kewanna from
1830's to late 1930's.
