Looking for info on Archibald (Arch) Stewart born abt. 1795/1800 - ?. Was married to
Elizabeth Montgomery born abt. 1806 - ?. They lived in and raised a family in Franklin
Co., In. from 1830 - 1850. Can find no death or burrial records for either of them, but
by 1860 Archibald is living with daughter Sarah (now Sarah Updike) in Sandcreek, Decatur
County, IN. and Elizabeth is gone or died by then. They are my Gr., Gr., Gr., Gr.,
Grandparents. They had children named: Alijah (mistranscribed as Abagal, Abigal in
census), Chatfield ( my Gr., Gr., Gr., Grandfather), Mary, Nancy, Joseph (believed to be
Joseph Henry), Rebecca, Eliza, and Sarah ( because she's born abt. 1826 she's not
listed in 1850 census with other family members as she has married to Aron Updike and left
the parental household).
.
Alijah married Euphema (mistranscribed as Uphlet in a census) and by1860 they are living
in Clay County, ILL. In the household with them are his brother Chatfield and
Chatfield's wife Margaret (my Gr., Gr., Gr., Grandparents) along with daughter,
Loretta (my Gr., Gr., Grandmother)
Alijah and Euphema remain in Clay County, Ill till 1880 where they are found back in
Indiana in Decatur County, But Chatfield, Margaret and daughter Loretta move back to
Decatur County, IN by the 1870 census. Chatfield, Margaret White Stewart and Loretta are
burried in Finley cemetery in Decatur Co., IN. but Margaret and daughter Loretta have no
birth or death dates recorded at the cemetery and I can find none elsewhere for them.
Chatfield's death date is 4 Jan. 1877.
Sarah Stewart Updike and Aron are also burried in the same Finley cemetery.
Joseph Henry and his wife Eliza Ann Vantreese are also burried in Finley Cemetery.
Rebecca married Peter J. Bockover and they are also burried in the Finley Cemetery.
I believe but not for certain that Mary and Nancy are also in this same Finley cemetery.
I have found nothing to indicate where and when Archibald and Elizabeth died or where they
are burried. I would also like to learn names of parents and siblings of both of them. I
have found some census info although not definitive that they once lived in Ohio.
According to census info Archibald was born in Pennsylvania. There are several Archibald
Stewarts born in Pennsylvania around the same time but they have taken me on wild chases
and none of them ended up in either Franklin or Decatur Counties in Indiana.
I havn't been able to find parents or siblings for my Gr., Gr., Gr., Grandmother
Margaret White either. I have found several Margaret Whites born in Indiana with birth
years close or matching her but nothing definitive.
To make matters worse My Great Grandmother Dollie Stewart Lockridge is listed in only one
census with her mother Loretta along with her Grandmother in 1880 Decatur Co., IN, and
even then she's listed as Dollie Birk. I don't believe her mother married her
father as I've found no record of their marriage. By 1898 Dollie's last name is
Stewart when she marries( 1897 Decatur County, Indiana) my Great Grandfather William A.
Henry Lockridge. I may never find out what Dollie's father's name is. In the
marriage record for Dollie and William A. Henry lockridge, the father of the bride is
listed as unknown. Oh Bother!. Dollie dies June 2, 1898 giving birth to my Grandmother
Lillie Alice Lockridge and is also burried in the same Finley cemetery. William remarries
to Maude may Baker a year or so later and they are burried in East Hill Cemetery in
Rushville, Rush County, Indiana
