Dear Becky: I have been looking for decades for someone in Franklin County IN who might be
able to help me find more information on my SAM/SAHM and SCHNABEL ancestors: Adam SAM - b.
1802 near Aschaffenburg, Bavaria m. Elisabeth SCHNABEL - b. ABT 1805 probably in
Grosswallstadt, Bavaria; bur. as Elisabeth SAHM on 25 Jul 1849 in old church
cemetery next to St. Peter's church [east of walk, Row 10, grave 9 - no tombstone
marker]1836: Adam SAAM, wife Elisabeth, and children [Adam, John, Elizabeth & newborn
Ignatius] disembarked from Le Havre, France on 10 Aug aboard the Bark Potomac,
arriving in Baltimore MD on 18 Oct.
1837: Adam SAM family arrived in Franklin County IN on February... Adam became naturalized
citizen 19 Aug.1838: Adam SAM purchases 70+ acres in NW corner [Section 13] of Highland
TWP on 01 Aug.1839: Theresia SAM born and baptized at St. Peters by officiant Joseph
FERNEDING.1841: Martin SAM [my g-grandfather] born and baptized at St. Peters in 1842 by
officiant Michael O'ROURKE.1845: Anna Maria Margaretha SAHM born and baptized at St.
Peters by officiant William ENGELN.[Note: St. Peter’s Parish apparently began to
change the spelling of the SAM surname to SAHM about this same time, with all subsequent
church records using the surname SAHM; interestingly, this change seems to have begun
after ENGELN came as pastor of St. Peter's in 1844]. Half-way through his service in
Company C of the 35th OVI during the Civil War, Martin SAHM [surname spelling in the 1860
Census, Butler County OH while living with the STOKES family as a farmhand] changed his
surname to SAUM for some unknown reason. In his military records his surname started out
as being spelled SOAME, so perhaps this change in spelling to SAUM helped everyone in his
regiment to pronounce his surname more easily! I would love to share information, if
possible... Rich SAUMParadise CArsaum(a)netzero.net ---------- Original Message

The State library will have lots of microfilm from Dearborn & Franklin County. Also
catholic church records for those counties. They are open on Saturdays. They don't
have many searchable items on their website.
Plainfield probably has access to Ancestry but won't have the county records you want.
My grandfather's mother was from Lawrenceville in Dearborn Cty. I saw Busald in that
area also. They all seemed to congregate in the same places when they left the farm. Some
Busalds & Sahms ended up in Beech Grove like my mom's parents did. My
grandparent's were frequent "funeral goers" and I have the box of funeral
cards that were collected over the years. I have on Busald and many Sahms.
