This is very interesting! Does anyone have a history or photos of
Scipio/Philanthropy or any of the other little communities in Franklin
County? They would make great additions to the website!

Thank you Pat,
The post office mentioned, Philanthropy, is interesting to me because
(according to A HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHICAL CYCLOPAEDIA OF BUTLER COUNTY, OHIO)
about 1840 it was moved from the Ohio side of Scipio to the Indiana side.
For a short while it was located in my great-great grandfather Thomas
Watson's tailor shop. I'm trying to narrow down exactly where his tailor
shop was located. Thanks again for your response.

Elizabeth:
According to the book INDIANA PLACE NAMES by Ronald L. Baker and Marvin
Carmony Scipio: villiage in Franklin County: Platted in 1826. The post
office was called Philanthropy, apparently a commendatory name. Scipio is
for one of the classical Roman statesmen, perhaps via New York.
Note: there is also a Scipio in Jennings County, IN. Laid out in 1817 and
named by William Clapp for one of the noted Roman generals
Hope this helps.

Hello Mail listers,
I'm new to your mail list. I am researching the town of Scipio, Springfield
Township from 1838 to 1858. My ancestor, Thomas Watson, was a tailor in
Scipio during those years. Scipio is a bit confusing to me - it crosses the
Ohio state line into Butler County.
I'd appreciate any information or thoughts anyone might be willing to share
about Scipio.
