I have a Peter Smith in Franklin County, Indiana, but unfortunately I have
not done much research on the Smith's.
In the 1850 and 1860 Census's Peter was in Brookville. By the 1870 Census
he had moved to Metamora. I have never found him listed as Schmidt, only
Smith. In the 1850 and 1870 census he was listed as a cooper and in the
1870 he was listed as a house painter.
His obituary is as follows:
"Peter Smith was born in Bavaria, Germany, July 3, 1815, and died in
Metamora, Ind., January 25, 1888. In 1833 he came to America with his
parents landing at Baltimore, whence the family moved to Indiana, where
Peter and four brothers united with the Methodist Episcopal church. In
November, 1844, Peter married Miss Nancy McNeely. He was the father of five
children, four of whom survive him. He was a loving husband, a kind and
considerate father, an earnest and devoted Christian, whose life was hid
with Christ in God, and his end was perfect peace."
I have a photography of Peter (looks like a small man and has very
distintive, piercing eyes)captioned:

Great-grandfather
Peter (Peter was added in Ink)Adam Smith
Born Bavaria, Germany
Came to U.S. when about 21
As a curiosity when I was doing something else, I found a reference to a
Peter Smith born in Bavaria on the exact date as my Peter on the IGI on
FamilySearch. It looked to be a family group sheet compiled by a German
from German records only. I played around with it one day using the Smith's
in Franklin County. I remember it being uncanny how it matched with one
exception some Smith's I found in Franklin County. More questions than
answers. Unfortunately I have a few more weeks of school before I will take
a closer look and get back to you.

I have thought for a long time that Adam was the father of Jacob Schmidt
but I can't prove it.
In the Index of Burials at St. Peter Catholic Cemetery, Highland
Township, Franklin County, IN there is the following:
Jacob Schmidt died July 14 1864 72 years old.
Adam Schmitt died october 7, 1874 74 years old
John Schmitt died 1875 69 years old
John Adam Schmitt 66 years old died March 21 1892
I have searched passenger and Immigration lists index 1500s - 19001

How do I find more information on the above? Who do I write to?
I also found the following:
Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild
Ship Charles Ferdinand

Adam Schmidt Bechtheim 2 1(child 8-12) 1(child 4-8) 2(child 1-4)
(Jacob at this time would have been about 6)
A note below this entry was that Adam and family settlet in Ripley
County, Indiana. He and wife raised 9 Children. Changed the name to
SMith soon after arrival. Both are buried at St. Paul's Lutheran
Cemetery, STumpke's Corner, Ripley Co. On the markers show Schmidt:
I have never been able to find out anything from Ripley County. I need
to look at Ripley COunty, IN again.
Thank you for any help anyone can give me and also anyone that has
responded to me.
