Randy,
Last year I visited Franklin County Indiana and particularly,
Brookville, Indiana. I have been researching my family tree since 1975.
Although, I am researching the Haymond and Snodgrass family, I have not
found much information. Last year was not my first trip to Brookville
and I plan to go back again sometime. My Haymond and Snodgrass family came
from the western part of Virginia now known as West Virginia
to Indiana about the time Indiana was still called the Indiana Territory.
Last year with the help of a courthouse employee, I found the land record
for Calder Haymond. I also looked at some marriage records too
but did not find what I was looking for but I am not unhappy about that. I
also got a death record from a Health Department employee too.
I mentioned about all the records that are stored in the attic of the
courthouse and they gave me an opportunity to visit the attic but I turned
down the
offer because I did not have all that time and my parents were waiting for
me in the car too. Something needs to be done about those records
before they disappear or get destroyed.
Finding the place of burial for Calder Haymond has been a problem too since
no one knows where he is buried. He must be buried in or near
Brookville on the land he purchased. I suppose I could send another message
to the mail list with more detail where the land is located because I
purchased a
map at the courthouse. I also went to the Brookville Public Library and got
some obituaries before I left town. The library personnel were very
helpful. I have even gotten obituaries from them via snail mail too. It is
not easy for me to get to Brookville since I live in northwest Indiana
and work in Chicago. My only opportunity to visit Brookville is if I take a
vacation from work. That is what I did last year but I have more to explain
about my visit to Brookville. I want to let everyone know on the list that
it is not always easy getting family tree information anywhere.
Several years ago I wrote a letter to the caretaker of Maple Grove Cemetery
in Brookville asking for information about my great-aunt. I wanted to know
if she passed away and buried with my great-uncle at Maple Grove Cemetery. I
wanted a copy of the information from their records. I already have the
information about my great-uncle from the cemetery but I got it from a
former caretaker who apparently retired. The current caretaker never
responded about my
great-aunt. Also, the state of Indiana refuses to give me a copy of the
death record too simply because she was my great-aunt.
I am not sure where she died but she was living at Connersville, Indiana.
I offered to pay the current caretaker for the information and sent a SASE
too but again he never responded. I realize they have their job to do but I
also
believe that they could have responded for such a little amount of
information. Sometimes I wonder if the current caretaker knows my great-aunt
family
since they had children who are now fully grown and told them that I was
making inquiries about their mother and the children in return may have told
the
current caretaker not to reveal any information. I met my great-uncle and
great-aunt when I was younger and they were very nice people but I never
met their children and my mother told me that they are not very nice.
Several of the children live in the Brookville area. By the way, my
great-uncle and
great-aunt are Olin Richmond Mulvany and Nellie Goldsberry. The children
already told me several years ago they would not share information
with me. How sad that they would say something like that to a relative like
me.
That was one of the reasons I went to Brookville last year. Again, I visited
the Maple Grove Cemetery and went to my great-uncle gravesite and
discovered that my great-aunt did in fact pass away several years ago and
the children never informed me about it.
While I was at the cemetery, I noticed that the grass needed to be cut and I
seen no sign that it was being done. Before leaving, I went to the cemetery
office to request the information I have been trying to get for several
years. A man at the office took my name and address but refuse to take any
money.
He said he would send me the information via snail mail. The information
never came. The man was just sitting in the office probably just passing
time.
There were several other men in the office too. They all looked like they
worked for the cemetery but they were not doing any work at all.
It is terrible that there are people out there who enjoy mistreating other
people and especially at Maple Grove Cemetery.
Although, my visit to the Maple Grove Cemetery ended on a bad note, my
overall visit to Brookville was enjoyable and plan to go back.
Forgive me for writing such a long message to the mail list but I believe it
reveals interesting information for future researchers.
Thank you for taking the time to read this message.

Interested in the Snodgrass family from WV. Any chance that they came from Ohio Co., WV?
Trying to find out what happened to Charles Snodgrass who married Temperance (nee Potter)
Criswell in 1862 Ohio Co., (W) VA. This was the 2nd wife of Charles and the 2nd husband of
Temperance.
Best Wishes,
Donna
