Several years ago I did some research in the Court House in Franklin Co
IN and asked to see the probate packet for an 1853 probate for John
Havice. I was told that all the old records had been taken to the attic
but they could not let me go up there to see if I could find what I
needed, as they were all in disarray. GeneoLady is very lucky that she
got to see what was there and bring some of the records down. I agree
there is a "gold mine" of information scattered around up in that
attic! Let's hope the things are still in that attic and she or the
Tri-County Society would be allowed to record some of the pertinent
information they contain. How sad that people working in Court Houses
don't realize the value of those "old loose papers"! I was told by an
employee in one court house in Illinois where they were undergoing some
remodeling to lower the ceilings that she watched while some records of
that type were thrown up where they would land between the two ceilings
and then the lowered ceiling was completed and that means those records
are absolutely unreachable by anyone!
