"Genealogy Without Documentation is Mythology"
Randy and all,
I am a board admin for several GC boards and followed the beta testing (and
problems) thru the Boards-Admins list for over a week after the new system
went live.
The new boards are now a combination of the old Gen Connect postings
(queries, obits, wills, etc), and all of the queries that were originally on
the Ancestry and MyFamily sites.
The AUP and copyright notices on the new system are the same that appears on
all Rootsweb sites. The poster owns his/her post(s) and they cannot be sold
for profit by RW, Ancestry, or MyFamily. The new site, of course, includes
advertising banners thru which Ancestry/MyFamily creates income.
I understand (may be wrong on this) that you do not have to have a
userid/password to read postings, but need one if you wish to post. This
system is no different than is currently used by Ancestry, and most people
simply use their Ancestry ID on the new system.
You state "by way of other county coordinators that some of the
information has been used for their monetary benefit" and "The same goes for
rootsweb....it is beginning to use information they receive for profit."
I would appreciate knowing specifically "what" information either group is
using for "profit" and the sources of this information. Unless RW is
violating the terms of their own AUP and copyright notices, they cannot
legally be profiting from voluntary contributions to any RW site. So it
would be important to know exactly what RW is profiting from and whether
there is proof of this "profit."
Cheers,
Nel
