Subject: Franklin co, Ind
Hello,
Your name and email are on the Franklin co, Ind US GenWeb page. Not sure if you are
currently involved with Franklin co or not.
My gt grandfather wrote a sort of autobiography in 1913. In it he mentioned that his
father (William McKown) had been married at age 19 (apx 1805) and lived in PA. There were
several children from this marriage of which gt grandfather only mentioned two in any
detail, Jane McKown b 1810 married William Augar and Martha McKown b 1816 who married
Jesse H. Perry. The first wife died and William married again in Ohio before moving many
times. Using
Ancestry.com, I have managed to track these families in Ohio, Illinois and
Indiana. In many cases it appears that William's two daughters w/ families lived in
the same place as did William.
Jane McKown Augar, according to my gt grandfather lived to be an old woman and died in
Laurel (Franklin co) Indiana. I am hoping that there might be some local record that
would provide her death date, and perhaps some detail about her life. All the connected
McKowns were in Fulton co Ill for the 1840 census and both Jane McKown Augar w William and
their children and Martha McKown Perry w Jesse and their children are in the 1850 census
of Franklin co, Ind. I can not find William Augar in the 1860 Franklin co census, but
Jane is there. By 1870 she is gone but son Alonzo is there and in 1880 son Spencer (S.C.)
is there. I am guessing that William Augar died before the 1860 census, and it would
appear that Jane McKown Augar died between 1860-1870.
I don't know how many cemeteries there are in Laurel or if cemetery records go back to
1860. As with many surnames, the spelling of Augar is rather loose, Augear, Augur, Ager,
etc. Are there any probate indexes that list William Augar or Jane McKown Augar that
would provide a clue as to their death date?
What do you charge for researching Franklin co records and do you think records might
exist? If you don't personally do researching, can you refer me to someone there who
is familiar with the local records and could determine if cemetery, probate and newspaper
records would exist from apx 1850 onward?
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely yours,
David Crombie
