Lafayette Evening Call
January 13, 1896
Lafayette, Indiana
Mrs. Samuel Carter, widow of one of the leading citizens of the Shawnee prairie, who
resided three miles south west of Odell, died at 8 o'clock Saturday evening, aged
about 86 years. She has been bedridden for two years past, with paralysis, and a helpless
invalid, though not a great sufferer. She leaves a son, James Carter, and two daughters:
Mrs. Alex. Sayers (Caroline) and Mrs. Beever, Of Newtown. She has been a life-long member
of the Salem Baptist church, near her home. The funeral took place at 1 p.m. today from
the Salem church, with interment in the cemetery nearby. Mrs. Dr. Yeager and other
Lafayette friends went down to attend.
NOTE: Anna Mills Carter was the daughter of James F. Mills and Jemima Robbins, early
settlings of Fountain Co., coming here in the mid-1830's from Butler County, Ohio.
James and Jemima Mills are also buried in Salem Cemetery, Davis Township, Fountain Co.,
IN.
