Death of Mrs. A. T. Sayers
Passed Away Saturday Following
Ten Days Illness. Lived Entire Life
in The Community
Mrs. Alexander T. Sayers passed away at the family home near Shawnee Mound at 2:30
o'clock Saturday afternoon,
following a ten days illness. Death was the result of asthma and heart trouble.
Caroline Carter Sayers, daughter of Samuel and Annie Carter, was born in Davis
township, Fountain county, Indiana, November 3, 1884; entered into rest April 5, 1919; age
74 years, 5 months, 2 days.
She attended the district common schools of the neighborhood and after completing the
same she entered what was known as the Sugar Grove Collegiate Institute where she remained
one year, and afterwards entered Wesley Chapel a prominent ladies seminary located west of
Crawfordsville taking a course of study extending through the years of 1862 and 1863. The
subject of this sketch was afterwards taught in the district schools of the township and
adjoining neighborhood.
Brought up by parents of sterling integrity who were active influential pioneer
citizens of this county and community in reclaiming the forests and wild prairie from the
uncivilized savage, bringing the country up to the highest state of cultivation and
refinement to the blessings we now enjoy.
Her training was from that of Christian parents and was such that she always had high
ideals and stood firmly by her
conviction of right.
On October 1, 1867, Alexander T. Sayers and Caroline Carter were united in marriage by
Rev. Charles J. Bowles, at the place of her birth where she passed away. To them were
born five children - Mrs. Julia K. Davis of Odell; William C. of Wingate; Mrs Agnes D.
Meharry of Shawnee Mound; Robert F. of Lafayette; and Samuel C. of Greencastle. There are
also thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
During January, 1871, at the time of the great revival meeting conducted by Rev.
Samuel D. Colvin, and with her new devoted husband, both united with the M.E. Church of
Shawnee Mound, and always remained a member of that organization.
On October 1, 1917, this worthy couple celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their
marriage at the old family home. Now more than 51 years ago at this Golden Jubilee of 50
years, the following guests were present who witnessed the wedding ceremony: Mrs. Alvina
Cassell, Mrs. Lucrecia Poole, Mrs. Julia Allen, Mrs. Mary Newlin, Mrs. Amelia J. Kerr,
Mrs. Mollie Yerkes, Edward Cochran, Matt B. Davidson, James and Robert Carter. All these
were present at her burial except Mrs. Allen.
The children have the recollection of many years of loving companionship, and the
priceless heritage of a mother's sacred love.
May we all have the same cheerful view of the same earnest hope, when we tread the way
towards the last dividing line. May we be able to look earnestly on the past and as
serenely contemplate the future as this dear departed one, whom we all loved and whose
life was a benediction to all of us.
"I live for those who love me,
For thos who know and trust me,
For the heaven that bends above me,
And the good that I can be."
The interment was made in the family burial lot in the Salem cemetery, at 11
o'clock Tuesday April 8, after appropriate services at the home conducted by Rev. Geo.
W. Switzer. Chosen hymns were read by Rev. W. C. Evers who assisted in the services.
Conductor J.G. Galey had charge and placed the remains in a brick vault with a rock slab
covering. The floral offerings were elaborate.
The pallbearers were Judd Meharry, Robert Kerr, John Miller, Emit Arnett, Lawrence
Linville, Lloyd Taylor, Nelson Carter and Bert Whitehead.
Flower bearers - Blanche Davis, Elvah Davis, Bernice Sayers, Clare Meharry, Carrie
Meharry, Dean Davis, Vinton Davis and Hugh Meharry.
