Elizabeth Ann Campbell, the eldest daughter of Jonathon and Evaline Moon Campbell, who
passed away 8 years ago at the age of 88, was a splendid representative of the pioneer
spirit which existed among our ancestors in the early days, that spirit of hardihood which
has made the real America. Left an orphan at a very early age, she and her two sisters and
brother, Margaret Emily, Diana Jane, and James W., made their home with their gradparents,
William and Elizabeth Moon.
Life was hard in those days and there were few childhood pleasures; consequently, the
children thought more of the serious side of life and of genuine work. And so the
foundations for enduring the hardships which came to almost everyone were well laid;
otherwise they could not have undergone the sacrifices and labor which followed in later
years.
When Elizabeth Ann was 18, she was married to Nelson Metsker; shortly after her marriage
her grandmother died and the grandfather, 2 sisters, and brother came to live with her.
Thus was established a household of 6 within a few months with a girl of 18 both as mother
and sister to the younger 3 children, who as time went on, grew up and were married one by
one, going to their own homes. Diana Jane who was married to Wallace Fenton was the
youngest of the 3 and the last to leave her sister's roof. By the time she had
departed there were 5 children of Elizabeth's in the home and 3 more came later.
Nelson Metsker died at the age of 36 and the widow was left at 33 to care for 6 children,
2 children having already died at an early age. She did her part bravely with no
complaints, giving to each as full and rich a life as was possible under the
circumstances, when work with scanty pleasures was all there was in life.
this was a page included in the campbell family history in a fountain county library. it
did not give the date for these events.
