In my area the trustees are responsible for the upkeep of all cemeteries in
their township. However, active cemeteries are in large part maintained by a
cemetery association. Some of their funding comes from the county but
association members provide much of the support. These "active" cemeteries
get the attention which is understandable.
Our township trustees are elected too, but often reluctantly. They end up in
too many cases of seeing their main job as to keep taxes as low as possible.
Pioneer Cemeteries (those with less than 6 burials in the last 50 years) are
out of site and out of mind to most people including many of the township
trustees. Unfortunately, Pioneer Cemeteries by definition no longer have
organized group of descendents to express their concern or support.
I feel we owe our pioneer ancestors to see that the grounds are kept free of
overgrowth at the very least, and as a citizen of my county and state, I
would expect to have part of my taxes go towards this. Stone repair is a
major issue and a costly one. I would like to at least see a certain amount
of the annual maintenance budget directly towards stone restoration.
Hopefully, if money is committed for this purpose on a regular basis, an
entrepreneur will surface to fill the need.
My thoughts FWIW,
Rich

Some food for thought when discussing the upkeep of the cemeteries. Your
feed back would also be appreciated. Yes, MOST, BUT NOT ALL. Only the
abandoned cemeteries are the responsibility of the trustee, BUT how are the
trustees to repair the tombstones or have someone repair them when we can
find no one qualified to do the task correctly. I feel, when it comes to
repairing the tombstones, most people don't know the difference between a
marker and a 2 x 4. I really do sympathies with the need to have these
cemeteries repaired but the cost is another thing to keep in mind. If the
trustee takes care of the problem then the taxpayers (you and me) have to
pay for the job to be done and in most cases the taxes would have to be
increased.
Let me know your thoughts, your solution to the problem, just keep in mind
it is not always the trustee that is at fault, sometimes we are just
fighting the system.
