from the Danville Gazette (Danville, Indiana)--issue of Thursday, October 17, 1918--page
8, column 1:
On a farm near Covington, Fountain county Indiana, there was born to E.C. and Sarah J.
Phebus, on Thursday, December 30, 1875, a son who was named William Oscar Phebus. His
schooling was obtained in the common schools of his home county and in the Central Normal
College of Danville. After becoming of age he remained on the farm and taught school for
eight years.
At Chrisman, Illinois, on Tuesday, April 10, 1901, he was united in the bonds of holy
wedlock to Miss Flora M. Koons, the Rev. Albert Blunk, of the M.E. church officiating.
So highly respected was he by his neighbors and friends that at the election of November,
1910, he was the first Democratic recorder to be elected in Fountain county in thirty-five
years, and with the faithful assistance of his wife filled the office to the perfect
satisfaction of the people of the county.
In the spring of 1915 Mr. and Mrs. Phebus became residents of Clayton. Here he entered
into the restaurant business and their personalities gained the friendship of the entire
community.
About a week ago Mr. Phebus contracted pneumonia, which terminated fatally at about two
o'clock Sunday afternoon, October 13th, 1918, when he had attained the age of
forty-two years, nine months and thirteen days.
His life in our midst was an open book, read of all. No doubt, like all of us, he has
made mistakes, but now of all times it becomes us to cover them with the mantle of
charity. He is survived by his wife, his father, E.C. Phebus, of Covington, two sisters,
Mrs. Fred Staunton, of Covington, and Mrs. Albert Bowman, of Camp Taylor, Louisville, Ky.
Interment was at Mount Hope cemetery, Covington, whither he was preceded by his mother and
brother. The funeral services were conducted by the Masonic and I.O.O.F. fraternities.
CARD OF THANKS
I wish to thank my neighbors and friends and all who so kindly assisted me in any way
during the sickness and death of my husband.
MRS. W.O. PHEBUS
