Hi all,
I'm seeking any info out there on my family. My ggggrandmother Rachel
Whitlock was born presumably in Crawfordsville, In. She married James Askins
in 1837 in Crawfordsville. They had the following children: James Jr.,
Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Harriet, and Susan. The family stayed in Crawfordsville
thru 1860. James Sr. died and James Jr. is no where to be found. By 1870 the
family moves to Covington, In. Elizabeth marries George Thompson and has
children George, William, Charles W. and Charly. Susan marries George
Johnson and has children Walter and Clifford. Harriet marries Edward Grant
in Illinois and has child Rina (Rena). All the family was listed in the
Montgomery Co. register of Free Negroes in 1853. They were one of the few
Black families in Montgomery and Fountain Co. I'm hoping that someone has
run across any info on this family. Rachel Askins was still alive in 1900.
Not sure about 1910 as I don't have access to an index for that census.
Harriet (Hattie) was still alive in 1920, but I can't find her in 1930. If
anyone has info on this family please contact me or point me in a direction
to look. Thanks for your time.
