Covington, Indiana, December 21st
Mrs. Helen DeHaven Martin, aged twenty-three years, wife of James Martin,
passed away at 6:30 o'clock Thursday evening at her home south of the city
after a week's illness from influenza. No death in recent years has caused more
genuine sorrow than the passing of this excellent young woman. She was born
in this city, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur C. DeHaven, and had lived
here all her life. Following her graduation from the Covington High School she
was married to James Martin, son of Dr. and Mrs. E. J. Martin and to this
union a daughter, Mildred, aged about two years was born. They have been living
happily on a farm south of town. The mother of the deceased, died two weeks
ago and a week alter Mrs. Martin was stricken with the influenza and was thought
to be recovering when change for the worse set in and in spite of everything
that could be done to save her life she passed to her eternal home.
Deceased was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and was active in all
social and young people's activities of this community. She was possessed of a
most amiable disposition, was a splendid neighbor and beloved by all. Besides
the husband and daughter, she is survived by her father, two brothers, Dr. Sam
DeHaven of Peru; George DeHaven of Elcampo, Texas; and Elver DeHaven of
Seattle, Washington; and two sisters. Mrs. Grace Boggs of Jacksonville, Florida; and
Mrs. Ruth Martin, of Rock Island, Illinois. Arrangements for the funeral have
not been fully completed. The body has been taken to the home of Dr. E. H.
Martin, East Liberty street, and an effort is being made to obtain Dr. H. K.
Fox, former pastor of the Presbyterian church here, now of Dayton, to conduct
the funeral, assisted by Rev. Kiskaddon, the local pastor. The services will
probably be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Martin residence,
interment following in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
