Joel owned property in Shawnee Township in Fountain County in 1840. It wasn't until
the 1850 census that all names of family members show on any census. According to this
1840 census, there were 4 people living in Joel's home. A male under 5, a male 20-30,
a male 30-40, and a female 20-30.
Marriage records show that Joel and Mary Ann married on April 6, 1837 in Fountain County.
The only other Brandenburg marriage in Fountain County in these early years was for
Ebenezer Brandenburg who married Louisa Jones on April 20, 1843. Ebenezer again married in
1860 to a Matilda.
In a book on the history of Fountain County, there is mention of a Jane Brandenburg.
Supposedly, several people who were originally from Ohio formed a Presbyterian Church in
1827 in Richland Township. Jane was mentioned as a member. No mention of a husband for
her, but a possibility that this is Joel's mother? But then, could be a sister.....
I will check the earliest settlers for Fountain County to see if there is any Abbott
families mentioned. Since Mary and Joel didn't marry until 1837, there is a good
possibility that her parents are shown on the earliest maps.
