I have a good idea who Nancy was. In the 1930 and 1940 census, the only Carson in
Foutain County is a James Carson. Another researcher, John Laird, is researching the
Taylors who came to Fountain County in 1835. A Reuben Taylor died either on the trip or
just into Fountain County, and his widow married "the Carson." I have a hunch
that Nancy was James Carson's first wife, since she died before the widow Taylor
arrived.
Also, following up on your information about the names of Elvira's parents, I
found a David and Margaret Carson living in 1850 in Piatt County, Illinois. They were 84
and 72 and both were born in Pennsylvania. Elmira Carson (who married John Henry Welch in
1836 in Foutain County, according to Indiana marriage records) Welch and family were also
living in Piatt County - and did live there the rest of their lives.
Since James Carson was the only Carson listed in the Fountain County census in 1830
and 1840, and since he had people of the appropriate ages and sex living with him, I have
a hunch he was one of David and Margaret's older sons, and that they were living with
him.
I've been able to trace David back through Ohio and Pennsylvania, and everything
tracks.
You've really knocked down a long-standing brick wall for me. I'm wondering, too,
if the Margaret Carson in the graveyard might have been the wife of one of James'
older sons.
I'll be anxious to hear if you find any other Carson's in the graveyard
there. According to John Laird, the James Carson family eventually moved on to Livingston
County, Illinois about a decade or so after the widow Taylor arrived on the scene.
One thing, could you send me the citation for the book you're finding the
cemetary records in so that I'll have that source?
I do appreciate your help on this!
