Indiana Territory was created in 1808. In 1816, Indiana was accepted into the Union as a
state. On the 30th day of December, 1825, the act of creating Fountain County was
approved. The earliest settlement in the county was probably made in 1823. The first entry
of real estate was made in 1820. This information all comes from the book HISTORY OF
FOUNTAIN COUNTY 1881.
I read further on and it says that the county had been organized in 1826. According to
what I read, Richland Township was organized in 1826. Prior to 1833, the territory now
constituting Logan Township belonged to Shawnee and Davis Township. Logan Township was
organized in the March of that year by the board of commissioners. Van Buren Township was
once part of Cain, Shawnee, Richland, and Troy Townships. In 1841 VanBuren was organized
into a township. Shawnee Township was constituted July 24, 1826. Davis Township was
organized in 1829. Jackson Township was created in 1830. No date is exactly given for
Millcreek Township from the book HISTORY OF FOUNTAIN COUNTY 1983. It does say that
Millcreek was settled at a much later date than most of the townships in Fountain County,
perhaps due largely to the fact that immense tracts of heavy timber lands were held for
higher prices by speculators
I would have to look further for the other townships. I do see one article that says that
there were originally 5 townships within Fountain County.
