Samuel Carter was my 3 great-grandfather.
Attica newspaper, edition unknown
Date of death was December 1, 1893
SAMUEL CARTER, an old and well known farmer living east of this city, died on last Friday.
He had suffered from cancer for several years and that was the cause of his death. MR.
CARTER was born in Ross County, Ohio, October 18, 1809, and was consequently in his 85th
year. Until within the past few months, he was remarkably spry, doing a full day's
work and traveling for miles without fatigue. He came to Indiana in 1833, making his home
in Warre Co. for one year, when he came to Shawnee neighborhood and has since lived
there.
On May 27, 1835, he married ANNA MILLS, daughter of JAMES F. MILLS, an original pioneer
settler in Davis township. They had six children, four of whom are living: JAMES F. and
ROBERT CARTER, MRS. ALEX BEVER and MRS. A.T. SAYERS.
He was a Democrat in politics and many years held the office of trustee of the township.
He was a member of the Baptist church and at one time he was one of the most successful
stock dealers in this part of the state, but reverses came, and most of his fortune was
swept away. The funeral took place at Salem Cemetery last Sunday.

DEATH OF SAMUEL CARTER
Samuel Carter died at 2 p.m. Friday at his home in Davis township, Montgomery county,
three miles southwest of Odell. He was largely interested in stock raising and is said to
have been the pioneer in that business in the counties of Montgomery, Fountain and
Tippecanoe. During his long business career he made and lost several fortunes, but was
possessed of considerable property when he died. He was well known throughout Fountain,
Tippecanoe and Montgomery counties and was considered a wide-awake, progressive farmer and
a valuable citizen.
He was born in Ohio but had resided for almost sixty years where he died. He was 84 years
old and death was caused by a disease of the kidneys. MRS. CARTER is 77 years old and
has been an invalid for some time. The surviving children are: JAMES CARTER, who owns a
valuable farm adjoining the home place; MRS. ELIZABETH BEAVER, who resides at Newtown; and
MRS. CARRIE SAYERS, who lived with her parents. MR. CARTER was a Democrat in politics but
never sought political preferment.
The funeral was conducted from the Salem Baptist church Sunday morning at 11 o'clock
and was largely attended. Interment in the Salem cemetery.
