Bloomington (IL) Pantagraph - July 2, 2009 --- BLOOMINGTON - Marjorie Irene Oland Hayes,
98, Bloomington,
formerly of Danville and Attica, Ind., died at 2 p.m. Tuesday (June
30, 2009) at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington. Friends may call from noon until
service time at 2 p.m. CDT Monday
at the Maus Funeral Home, Attica, Ind., with Pastor Bob Elness
officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery, Attica,
Ind.
In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Attica
Christian Church or the Attica Public Library. Envelopes available
at the funeral home.
Marjorie was born in Warren County, Ind., on May 26, 1911. She was
the daughter of the late James Roy and Arletta Edith Ritenour
Oland. In 1934, Marjorie married Maurice Lemon Hayes. They lived in
Attica until 1949, when they moved to Danville. Maurice preceded
her in death on Nov. 20, 1986.
Surviving are a son, Richard Eugene (Kay Harper) Hayes, Monroe,
La.; a daughter, Janice Elaine Sleeter, Normal; seven
grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, LeRoy
Oland, Lafayette, Ind.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Oland; a sister,
Willa Rose Oteham; a sister-in-law, Irma Thayer Oland; and a
son-in-law, Eugene Sleeter.
Marjorie graduated from Attica High School in 1929 and later from
Olivet Nazarene University.
She taught primary grades at the Baptist School in Danville and
schools in Danville and Hoopeston.
In 1988, she returned to Attica where she enjoyed living until June
of 2005. She lived at Bickford House, Bloomington, her final four
years.
Marjorie was an enthusiastic member of the Attica Christian Church.
She enjoyed playing bridge, playing the organ, reading, writing
poetry and many other activities.
While living in Attica, she attended the Literary Club and the
Monday Club.
