Russell Shields, 84, Route 3, Covington, died at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9,
at Lakeview Medical Center, Danville, Ill. He was born Jan. 5, 1902, in
Henning, Ill., the son of James and Jenny Balsley Shields. He was a former resident
of Henning, Ill., and Gary, and he had been a resident of Portland Arch since
1963. He had been a foreman at United States Steel in Gary for over 30 years,
retiring in 1963. Surviving are a son, Robert Lee Shields, Yucaipa, Calif.; a
daughter, Mrs. Ron (Jeannette) Welton, Route 3 Covington; a sister, Addie
Nicholds, Gary; 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in
death by a son, George, two brothers and four sisters. Graveside services were
held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mann's Chapel Cemetery, south of Rossville, Ill.,
with Paul Kent officiating. Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home, Covington, was in
