Crawfordsville Journal Review 2-Mar-1964 8: 2- Gleela Ratcliff Of Veedersburg Dies;
Services Tuesday- VEEDERSBURG- Miss Gleela L. Ratcliff, 70, retired school teacher, died
at 4:45 a.m. Sunday in the Ben Hur Home in Crawfordsville. She had been a patient there
the last three weeks. Miss Ratcliff had been in failing health the last year. Born Sept.
14, 1893 in Veedersburg, she was a daughter of John and Ida Moore Ratcliff. She was a 1912
graduate of Veedersburg High School and attended Indiana University and the University of
Chicago. She was a 1920 graduate of Purdue University, where she obtained her master’s
degree in 1940. While a Purdue student Miss Ratcliff was elected to Omicron Mu, national
home economics honorary, Kappa Delta Pi, education honorary and Theta Chi Gamma, English
honor society. She operated a tea room in Indianapolis for several years and taught school
40 years, including 30 at Jefferson High of Lafayette. She served as home ec
supervisor for Lafayette schools and was on the Jefferson faculty when she retired. Miss
Ratcliff was active in the Indiana Home Economics Association of University Women. She was
a member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, at Attica, and in Veedersburg belonged
to the Study Club and Theta Nu Chi sorority. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Opal Moffett of
Veedersburg, with whom she lived; two nephews, Stephen Moffett of Kingman and Richard
Moffett of Kansas City, Mo., and several grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in
death by an infant brother and a sister. Funeral services are announced for 2:30 p.m.
(EST) Tuesday at the Parham Funeral Home, with Rev. John Servies officiating and burial in
Rockfield Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday afternoon and evening.
