Ruth,
Thank you. What a small treasure trove you have led me to. Just from the
things I can access for free online searching for William in conjunction
with the Rational Brethren I have the piece that indicates that indeed our
William is the brother of Israel Ludlow the surveyor from New Jersey. That
means that that which we have long believed is in all likelihood indeed true
and my father-in-laws genealogy has just extended at least 5 generations.
What a productive morning this has been for me. I will need to follow up on
the links and abstracts and subscribe to some things or purchase some
things, but I can do that.
Thanks again!
Kathie

William Ludlow seems to have been the author of a book of that title
about the ideas behind the Rational Brethren. (I hope to get access to
a copy while in the US this summer.)
There's also a book by Thomas Hamm, God's Government Begun: The
Society for Universal Inquiry and Reform, 1842-1846 (Indiana
University Press, 1996), which mentions him, the Rational Brethren,
the Coal Creek group, and their travails. You can google it --the
relevant bits are available on Google Preview.
